Is there any way to soften drums?
Published (2009-12-01 05:04:55)
Beagle so were you able to effectively tame the drums? what did you do? Hey Beags, thanks for checking up on me! Well, I wish I had better results to report, but things aren't going as I had imagined. Here's the main problem... As I learned in the other thread, I've set it up so that the overheads contribute most of the drums. This works great & gives me the drum sound I want, but the downside is I can't go...

Drum overheads: cymbal problem
Published (2009-12-01 05:04:51)
The photo's a bit small, but as I said in my previous reply, the mics are pointing at the edges of the cymbals, which is why you are getting the problem.

Twelve String Guitar
Published (2009-11-29 09:30:13)
I don't have a 12 string now, but was considering getting one. I'm using a '77 Martin D18. I have the internal pick-up and the jack, but I can't even remember what kind it is. I have tried recording that way, but it just didn't have the clarity and sparkle that using a mic did. I thought for just a plain strumming background that a 12 string might sound good.

Hi! I'm new to Cakewalk (& the world of recording midi as well), & I'm having trouble finding the specific answer to my question (I've found a few tips that came CLOSE to my problem, but not completely). I have my Yahama keyboard plugged into my laptop through a midi/USB cord. I am able to record my keyboard in the midi track, & then lead vocals & backup vocals...

Twelve String Guitar
Published (2009-11-29 09:30:13)
(I learned on a 12-string (20+ yrs ago). For strumming-rhythm only ... I'd record it DI (like all my guitars) (assuming it had a jack) in order to keep it as clean and an-echoic as possible. Then I'd probably extreme pan-it and dirty it with stage-ambience (PerfectSpace) to the opposite pan (with 30msec delay) ... while this guitar would be a non-dominant part of a symphony of...

Mastering - getting identical...
Published (2009-12-01 05:04:53)
Oh my.... sounds like a mess..... but maybe not. The way to approach recording is to: Start with the end in mind. You know that you will (or might) be putting these tracks on a CD where they will be played back to back. So when you are tracking them..... use the same settings on the tracks for vocals, guitars, bass, drums, etc... so that all the tracks have a common link to start with. If you need to... write down the settings in a note book....

bitflipper i have sonar 8 and i have waves mecury, i record rap vocals Dude, you bought a $7,000 plugin bundle and you don't know how to use reverb? Go down to the bookstore and shoplift a book on mixing. Ahem, the use of the word bought may not be appropriate here ...

Btw, re-recording the part is not an option since he's several hundred miles away at the moment. I think you're screwed. some folks may give you some advice on how to EQ or compress or otherwise tame them. but if he played hard and heavy and you wanted "psychedelic" - you're never going to be satisified with it, IMO. that would be kind of like removing the distortion from a ...

My first guess is that the overhead mics are too close... is that possible? I always thought the wash sound was part of a hard hitting style. Maybe you like a more refined playing style? What would a audience hear in the room? The wash can sometimes be turned into a distracting nuisance with the use of gates. Are you gating anything? best regards, ...

If you can afford it get the V Studio 700 system. That gets right out of the way of the computer and right into creativity where the energy should be. What about one of those all in one studios and one really powerful hardware synth.. But I can understand it if you dont want to spend a whole lot more on gear. You do bring up a good point though. All this technology is great but really its...

Just added a Maton mini 12string to a track. AP5 onboard one side and a pencil in the usual position into the other side. I'm not familiar with floor fish, but attack and release are very useful controls to play about with on noise gates. If it's a frequency conscious gate, you need to bear in mind that it won't just gate that frequency. It will gate the whole thing, but the gate will be triggered by that frequency - unless someone's invented something I don't yet know about...

Dave, I bought the CAD Pro-7 set of mics. Kick Snare Toms 1,2 & 3 2 OH I then added a second set of OH (for HH and Crash). The trick is to do a close mic of the toms (you'll always get some bleed). These are clamp on type. For me I EQ'd out the 'unwannted' frequencies so that if I was raising the ...

A regular reverb is perhaps not often the ideal FX for vocals, rap or other (except for the backing vocals, maybe). Specially in rap reverb can make it harder to follow the lyrics. If I use reverb, I prefer "plate" to "hall" or other. In general I prefer delays and convolution reverbs. No one can give you good hints because every song, every singer, every brand of microphone, ...

I have the same mic. I find that the closer I get to it, the better it sounds, whether it be vocals or acoustic guitar. On louder (rock) vocals I might get 8-10 inches away on louder parts, but any further than that and it tends to get thinner. Also, if I get too far away, more of the room comes into play, which can be a good or bad thing depending on your situation. Close equals warmth for me ...
