Try a few of the combined presets in SD2.2 to see if anything tickles your fancy. I think you're right in the sense that they are not punchy on first load. That's all part of the fun/frustration - getting the sound you want. You only need to do it once.

Have you ever taken time to study the presets some of the producers have created.  They seem to either be surprisingly simple or off the wall.  As I said before, they tend to not sound good soloed but in a mix they do what they are supposed to do.  You have to ask yourself, do you want it to sound good in a tune or hype you up when you first load it up?

Microsoft Visio could be put to this use. It would not be a "off the shelf" dedicated solution for your purpose but its reasonably easy to draw up connection diagrams of all sorts.
