HELP!!!!
Published (2009-11-27 13:47:00)
1. That the hard drive could be bad. Use hard disk test software (see google) and see how it fares. 2. Treat this like a fresh install. We know there is no download of restore media from packard bell or others so what you need is the restore media or a full retail copy of the OS and a LICENSE KEY. Bob

but have you checked XP's Control Panel - Sound applet? It will have all the System sounds that your system is configured with, and those sound bits in the list with a little speaker besides them are the ones currently selected. Try those, (the applet allows you to run a test), and see if any closely match the sound you are hearing. Mark

- Try on another PC or laptop with Windows XP. - Try a stand-alone PC or laptop with Windows XP out of the box (clean install). - Try another make of printer (say, Epson in stead of HP). The expectation is that you should be able to find a printer and a printer driver that work in non-administrator mode on a clean install of XP on some PC. Then start comparing. Kees

Fresh install of XP and no updates?
Published (2009-11-22 05:29:00)
The problem here is that I bought this copy quite a while back, on line, and naturally I don't remember where. Probably New Egg or Tiger Direct. But it's been at least a year, it was a spur of the moment purchase. Anything off the top of your head to turn on updates? Or on activation? Looks to me like without activation I could just install this copy on every PC I find.

I've found the problem! Somehow, AIM had claimed that part of the screen as belonging to AIM only- it had some setting that had embedded it there, even when it was shrunk down and only running as a background process. Removed that, and the problem's solved itself! Thanks for all of your help!

Permissions Issue: Software Test
Published (2009-11-23 14:10:00)
"111909 If i run the program with different admin credentials, both msconfig and the program run fine. However i've been told this is an unacceptable fix and need to find and resolve the problem." Quoted from the original message above. >.> It may very well still be a permissions issue, however, it's going to have to wait until tomorrow. Thx for the responses, keeping me on my feet.

Installshield problem
Published (2009-11-23 16:26:00)
Teatimer and all antispyware turned off, rebooted, and tried again. Same response to the 1.1 install attempt (although the numbers in parentheses were different). The 3.5 also failed, but at least this time the program didn't freeeze. The C: drive was cloned to a new hard drive earlier this year. Part of the advice I got at the time included downloading and using Advanced System Optimizer, part of which is a registry cleaner. Is that a...

Slow boot or normal?
Published (2009-11-23 10:07:00)
I had just switched to COMODO from the free McAfee that Comcast gave me. Boot time was about the same then but McAfee would update at anytime and hog the CPU and I couldn't find any settings to change that. It used to boot under 5 minutes but since all the MS service pack updates it's doubled in boot time. Could be coincindental.(sp) Oh well, besides the boot time it runs fairly well. As my computer abilities are very limited I...

Slow Computer

It is a clone PC running XP 32 bit. I am not a computer savy person so any other details you need I will have to dig out. I use ESET antivirus, MS Office, financial programs, photo programs, that's about it.

It doesn't work that way. Audio processes use their own CPU interrupt, which SHOULD allow them to have pretty much the highest possible priority. And if you had a dual CPU system, then your idea might work, because each CPU would have its own set of interrupts. The problem with multi-core CPUs is that they share a set of interrupts and really all that's being duplicated is the ...

Try restarting by holding the power button in until the system turns off, then power back up and see if the buttons work then?

I've found many suspect their machine when ONE program fails. They have no other issues but that ONE program but seem to forget that if they remove this ONE program then nothing on the machine fails. Since it's this ONE program I'd take this up with it's company or authors. Bob

Let's get down to business. Such failures are cured by competent IT staffers that administer this machines. They will use their tools to adjust permissions. Sadly I've seen this failure and there is no magic involved. There is no one article to fix it. It's just permissions so it is only a mystery until the staffer catches up with the various classes on administering Windows. ...

And is this a new version of the anti-virus application? What about other malware? An anti-virus is great, but it doesn't catch everything and we now need to scan with utilities like Malwarebytes' Antimalware and SUPERAntispyware to be sure we catch everything. The slow sending of email could also point to anti-virus, scanning the email before it lets it go. Mark

Got enough icons on the desktop? Don't hack. Right click the task bar and click properties. Click the Start menu tab, click customize, scroll down and uncheck "Use personalized menus".
