Your answer varies with the make but the erase cycles is for most this number -> 1000. Now the problem is that with WEAR LEVELING you will get more than 1,000 file writes. This means you can't use that as a counter. -> But let's get down to brass tacks. Are you backing up what you
can't lose? I find folk that use RW media and forget that it can fail well before its time. To add ...

"I wanted to invest in a 500GB hard drive for long-term storage for videos & photos." This forum is full of folk that thought external drives were STORAGE. They are not as evidenced by posts in this forum. Yes, they make a fine spare copy, but storage they are not. Hope this helps you avoid the usual
fatal mistake. Bob

HP when they didn't ship the media would give a way to create restore media. As to moving from IDE to sata I'm going to write it's unlikely in this machine. I
couldn't find any document telling me you could emulate IDE on the SATA ports so this means that unless someone has accomplished it on this machine the chances of success are nearly zero. Later machines came with the BIOS ...

But before I answer tell me what format means to you. One day I was in a hurry and someone asked me to format a drive. I did that and handed it back to them in 3 minutes. Then they took it home only to call up and ask why Windows didn't boot. I had formatted the drive but their definition was that Windows would be installed too. Ok, I can format most drives with

Why not restore from your backups? If
no backup, call http://www.drivesavers.com to ask them how much to save the files.

centralized means that you'll have a centralized
point of failure. Backup means not only a copy but a copy off the location and not easy to erase. You could take a 50 buck drive like http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=ST3750330A S-R&cat=HDD and put that into a case like http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=MAP-AI32US -PB&cat=CSE and on a NAS thing like http://www.geeks....

1. Ask dell. 2. I just fixed one
esata. It was simple. The owner thought it was powered by the esata connection. Changed the case to a powered unit and it spun up and worked. 3. Esata may or may not work on all machines. Be sure that the drive spins. If not, call the drive maker. If it spins, the next call is dell. Bob
