These are not "STORAGE". Just copies that we keep backups of so when they fail, we can make another backup and keep going. Bob

SimpleShare NAS gone dodgy!
Published (2010-01-05 19:36:00)
I am now updating. I have been in touch with Simpleshare (SimpleTech, which is a division/sub/something of Hitachi) tech support. The extent of their meager assistance was to advise that the NAS device uses a file system called "reiserfs" and that it might be possible FOR ME to recover the data using specialized file recovery software for this file format, but they had no interest in assisting, even though this appears to me to be a...

getting a quality enclosure and hard drive leaving it unplugged/disconnected whenever not in use. Left unplugged there's less chance of electrical spike damage or from tripping over connected cable. And 'cheap' doesn't usually go with quality or reliability. The question is whether to get 2.5" laptop drive with enclosure or a 3.5" drive with enclosure. Personally I vote for the 3.5" enclosure because drive...

Thanks again for all the help and for the link to Computer Geeks. I checked Newegg, Tigerdirect and Amazon for IDE 500GB drives for comparison. All their prices were much higher for the same capacity. I will probably buy that Hitachi drive. I have one last question about cloning. I have CS3 on my computer. If I clone my hard drive, do I need to deactivate CS3 before cloning and then reactivate it when I start using the new drive?

You could have also set the autoplay/autorun feature to run when USB is plugged-in, what pgm. to run. To change/disable that or make at least ask again, try: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967715 Once done and disabled, it won't autorun. However, you still need to close the pop-up, do that and then the plugged-in device will be available. If for some reason you want to act upon certain type files(association) then whenever those files...

Backup and System Storage
Published (2010-01-04 11:57:00)
Thanks Bob for your quick response and thoughtful comments. I want to make sure I understand you though. I proposed 2 physical drives: 1 for central storage and 1 for backing up all network data. So are you opining that it is bad to have 1 central area for storage of the storage hungry files like photos, audio, video? My reason for doing so was that that kind of data was overwhelming the HD for 1 computer and will probably start affecting the...

But before I answer tell me what format means to you. One day I was in a hurry and someone asked me to format a drive. I did that and handed it back to them in 3 minutes. Then they took it home only to call up and ask why Windows didn't boot. I had formatted the drive but their definition was that Windows would be installed too. Ok, I can format most drives with GPARTED if ...

HP when they didn't ship the media would give a way to create restore media. As to moving from IDE to sata I'm going to write it's unlikely in this machine. I couldn't find any document telling me you could emulate IDE on the SATA ports so this means that unless someone has accomplished it on this machine the chances of success are nearly zero. Later machines came with the BIOS ...

Your answer varies with the make but the erase cycles is for most this number -> 1000. Now the problem is that with WEAR LEVELING you will get more than 1,000 file writes. This means you can't use that as a counter. -> But let's get down to brass tacks. Are you backing up what you can't lose? centralized means that you'll have a centralized point of failure. Backup means not only a copy but a copy off the location and not easy to erase. You could take a 50 buck drive like http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=ST3750330A S-R&cat=HDD and put that into a case like http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=MAP-AI32US -PB&cat=CSE and on a NAS thing like http://www.geeks....

1. Ask dell. 2. I just fixed one esata. It was simple. The owner thought it was powered by the esata connection. Changed the case to a powered unit and it spun up and worked. 3. Esata may or may not work on all machines. Be sure that the drive spins. If not, call the drive maker. If it spins, the next call is dell. Bob
