Extending wifi reception in a hotel

You indicated that the suite you occupies varies with your stays there. But you said the problem is living room to bedroom variance with signal strength. Is it always this way with every suite?..ok in the living room but not the bedroom? That would seem strange as proximity to the transmitting device and mechanical barriers, i.e. walls, floors, etc., are your enemies. If all the living rooms work but not the bedrooms, it would seem that an AP...

......pick up the Internet the same as far as LR and bedroom. Each floor of the hotel is wired for wifi identically, so I assume the output is essentially the same on every floor. Also, I have what I call wifi antennas that people have given me to try. One plugs in the USB, gets very hot when in use, and has a conventional antenna attached. The other hooks to the same devise by means of a long cable but looks like the cone in a satellite...

If they advertise it they should make it work. Either request a room where you can pick up a signal or pitch a fit. Same with a TV in the room. It's free but if it doesn't work you call the front desk.

Who knows if the AP would have defaulted to 1 or 11 --were those channels available in my neighborhood. The setup wizard sets the device for "Auto". Obviously, that would preclude Ch 1 or 11 if the device detected signals on those channels, and then no "N" connectivity. That's a poor implementation --no two ways about it. I could see that there were low-signal Channel 1 and 11 devices near me, but I'm hoping for...

If you search this forum you will see the question about range extenders/antenna asked and some solution. I have used ftp://files.dlink.com.au/products/DWL-G710/Datasheet/DWL-G710_datasheet_03.pdf With mixed results. I think the is a old model now anyway. There are 2 type of range extenders you can buy. The easier of the 2 only uses wireless to wired. The best way to look at this type is a external wireless adapter attached to your computer...

If so there are some small portable wireless "routers" that can plug into a power outlet and the LAN connection that will give you your own wireless network in the room. Sorry, but I can't remember the exact one but I have seen them. Or how about this for 25 bucks? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 2E16833156038 Just carry it with you.

Some old wireless devices can't do WPA but sometimes a newer driver fixes this. As well, if you're using the manufacturer's software, try using Windows wireless instead.

Look at the manual and make sure the firmware is up to date in your router. http://support.dlink.com/products/revisio n.asp?productId=DI-707P I don't know which model you have so you'll have to select the right one. Log in to the router. Look for the firewall setting and turn the router firewall off. Make sure that you have a good firewall, like Zone Alarm or Comando. While you're there ...

If your using a router, it's measured by the maximum rate the router can transfer data. If your not using a router, it's measured by the maximum rate your modem can transfer data. However, the overall speed your going to have is what you signed up for with your ISP.

http://trendnet.com/products/proddetail.asp?prod=1 20_TEW-637AP ended with a product not available. So it's up to you to supply product manuals. One thing about some discontinued N gear is that many were Pre-N and didn't work out of the box. You got to go get firmware updates and talk to the makers. Bob

They are all pretty much the same given your requirements. Some have extra things like firewalls, virus scanners, VPN. Since you are not planning to transfer large amounts of data between your machines you don't even need gig ports. Not that there is much difference in price lately. Your primarily limitation will be how good your cable connection before it gets to your house....

Using msconfig and clicking the Services tab you have an option to hide all MS services and this will show you third party ones. Perhaps you'll see on that looks suspiciously like a wireless service. You can disable these until all but MS are running and, if no more WiFi connect, you'll know it's one of these.

When this happens, do you get some sort of hardware error message or failure shown in device manager? The reason I ask is that, with wireless connections, other factors are involved. These can be your router or another persons nearby as well as other forms of RF. Can you verify it's your own wireless card? As for cooling, it's well known that laptops need cleaning and it's not always ...

means the driver for that adapter is either corrupt or gone. Since you didn't tell us what that adapter is, reinstall it. Adapter can mean anything from USB, sound, video, NIC, wireless card, etc.
