GA-EP45-UD3P Rev1.0/1.1 BIOS

The ability to update the BIOS while Windows is running is a very new trick. I'm not trying to offend you but if you think back just a few years such updates were done with DOS boot diskettes for years and arcane command lines. It's improved but I have no qualms with a boot CD or diskette to do this update. Bob

"I congratulate on your background, it is better than mine." As Shakespeare said, "What's past is prologue." I rarely bring up such things in public forums for several reasons: 1. There are a lot of people on the web who are not what they claims and anyone can make any claims they want. Of course, I've been doing this long enough that you can verify all the information you want just by searching for Bob Stout. 2....

HP recovery issues
Published (2009-12-19 06:24:00)
I am from the old school of HP and computer repair. I have several sets of Hard drive recovery disc from HP, Compaq, Dell, Acer and several other companies. (these all came with the computers). All of these will re-image a drive. even the Asain drives that you can buy. First time I have used the recovery disc from the d: partion to replace a drive. I just gave that a shot, but I did not want anyone else buying their recovery kit which should...

I congratulate on your background, it is better than mine. "I also know that Windows uses klugey data structures for no better reason than to be able to claim IP of a proprietary system." Now if would just explain, how you know this? Actually defragmenters, and similar products predate the PC. You had to compress/reorganize Partition Data Sets on IBM mainframes. On CDC computers indirect access files reinitialized, and I believe...

Upgrading to Windows 7
Published (2009-12-22 14:02:00)
I currently share printers over my wireless network by right clicking and choosing "Share Printer". The printer is hooked up to the dekstop. My desktop and laptop both run XP and the sharing has no problems at all. If I upgrade my desktop to Windows 7 and keep the laptop as XP, will I still be able to share my printer the same way? Thanks.

you need it. Use an image backup like True Image to store the archive to CDs for that rainy day! A caveat is if the factory image has security protection against imaging/cloning but no consumer grade laptops have it.

Published (2009-12-27 17:41:00)
Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. However, I think my question was misunderstood, it's an odd question. I was trying to ask if, since I tried to update the BIOS within Windows, would it give me a message stating the BIOS update was not compatible with 64-bit windows, EVEN THOUGH it was actually compatible IF I used an alternative method to Windows. So in essence, should I try to update the BIOS with a USB drive (since that's...

But fair warning. Even the fastest Mac Pro with 8 CPUs is not fast enough for the usual video editor. You did set a budget so get some quad core unit with 4, 6, 8 GB RAM and pull the trigger. You will not find a video edit station for any price that will "run the programs effeciently." But you will find machines that will get the job done. Bob

Fairly generic. In fact I had an all too similar machine when I ran Windows 7 beta and RC with 512MB RAM. It ran fine so your machine has twice the ram so why upgrade this? The ONLY nugget is that there is no reason to go 64 BIT here. Just backup what you can't lose, slip in the Windows 7 32 BIT DVD and let it loose. Bob

1. Multi-tasking. We know that this is a slight of hand trick in the OS so to get better tasking we either change the OS or get more CORES. Quad Core machines are now in your price range. Do that! 2. Download speed. My NETBOOK downloads just as fast as my fastest machine so that's not a machine issue. For this you get a great internet connection. You didn't supply a country ...

there's more to the equation than just ram size and cpu speed... your intended usage will benefit from a quad core or better. i suggest you consider a core i7 or i9 (4 cores + hyperthreading). also, be sure to use 64-bit versions of your software, otherwise you won't be fully utilizing your 12gb of ram.
