Just now awaiting the computer, i have some pics to upload for you just waiting to see if they came out well with the lighting. Just one last issue is that it wasnt the scale that was binding up on the y axis, it was the table itself, i can't for the life of me figure it out. I don't want to force it nor do i want to take it apart. I'm about to call up John tomorrow to see if he can help me out. First impressions is that i can...

"Thats pretty rough, i hope in my lifetime i never sustain an injury that bad" I hope so too! Just don't ever get hit by a car....it'll ruin you day. Anyway, I'm glad you're making progress with your set-up. My machine sat on the floor of my garage for around 9 months while I healed enough to get it onto its legs. Since then I've been wheeling myself around on a stool trying to do as much as I can on...

Hello ryanhathy. Thanks! Would it be to much for you to discribe the major sub-componets of your cnc system. You could just e-mail me if you wish.

mojojerry, My CNC system is fairly simple. As I mentioned before, I am using a PMDX-122 breakout board which is connected to the parallel expresscard. I have four Gecko 203V drives connected to the breakout board, pins 2-9. I am using Keling stepper motors. My Mill is a X1 and I don't have any home or limit switches. Let me know if there is anything else you would like to know.

My understanding is that they are stepper motors and a controller with a selector switch for changing from x, y and z axes. This has some real advantages over the gear driven style, as you can now vary the feeds independent of the spindle and no longer need to run the lathe motor for power feed on the mill. The steppers are designed to interface with the CNC controller as well, so if you move up to CNC, you only need to purchase the controller...

A usb converter doesn't work. If you want to use usb you need to purchase a smooth stepper or similar.

Hi,
Thanks for the endmill tips, I'll check it out.
I'm also a freelance product designer so I've decided to do some of my own
prototyping with the new machine, which helps take some of the sting out of
the price. It is pretty comparable to anything else like golf or scuba
diving or something. Machined stuff has always been fascinating to me and I
waited about twelve years to finally get my ...

Hi Ira
Being a meanie I would use bolts so that the parts are reusable! Just take care that you do not distort the lathe bed when bolting it down no matter how the frame is constructed. Suggest checking the gap between all the lathe bed mounting feet and the stand using packing to make good any gaps. That said from your picture the lathe bed may twist the frame as there is no diagonal ...

That looks like it could use some support from the tailstock. Might not cure all your problems but should reduce your workpice flexing.

I'm not in your area, but I got my machine in Feb. Its my first Chinese made machine- before that I had an old South Bend lathe. I spent a lot of time trying to keep the SB running, but it was just too worn out, and the parts are really expensive. I've had a few issues with the patriot- mostly adjusments and a loose wire on one motor capacitor, but so far I'm satisfied with the machine, and it...

Forget Bobcad! Even the newest version 23 isn't worth the super discounts they are pushing if it doesn't have the user controls to generate usable Gcode. I bought version 21 and 22 but was never able to get them to create usable G code without hours of re-writing.
