Nice ideas man, to be honest with you I have been off work for four days now and been mostly in bed or on the couch with a cold or flu or something. I did manage to get out there today and finally install the encoder housings I machined on the X and Y axes. Just out of curiosity what is your ratio of the hydraulic cylinders? I know you said a 2" rod and 1" piston but what is the master and the slave sizes/ ratio? As far as...

Just wanted to say thanks to all you guys. Machine is basically complete ( are they ever really?). And its time to cut some chips. I installed the new Helicals's and ran the circle test. Backlash is now less than .001 and good enough for me The circle was nice and round and I can see no problems with it at all visually. Once I get a few parts cut and an enclosure built for it I will post some pics, again thanks for all you guys help, It...

Man that vice is enormous! What size model is it? As for the CNC conversion, I don't think it is going to be very difficult. All the screws are ordered and I expect to get them fairly soon. Once I have them and can do some test fitting, I'll post all the dimensions/drawings on my thread so you could just go ahead and order exactly the same stuff - if you were happy with the way I did it. The cost for everything needed - bearings,...

Pete, Hope you get feeling better soon, I know how rough that stuff can be. Since I already knew that the electric actuator could compress 10 Bellevilles directly, I made the cylinders the same bore, so if the main piston moves .100" the mill head piston will move the same .100". That is "if" the hose isn't expanding, which of course it is. So the main piston is traveling a bit more right now. The...

Pretty spiffy. A good strainer in the enclosure will help a lot. Would keep the majority of the chips out of the sump, just some fines now and again to remove. Hoss

Nice work!, and to answer your question about the spindle, yes you can tun it off/on, you will need a bob to do it. I used a multifunction from cnc4pc, it is the only one I have expeience with but I love it!! no more standing waiting for the part to finish and then turning off the router, now I just load the gcode hit cycle start and walk away and do something else.

Ok so I see Nema23 is rated at 2.7A, so I select 2.7A. Next I went in and changed the velocity until it wouldn't stall. I can get 32ipm, but if I try 50 it stalls. Then I noticed the motor was getting pretty hot. Are these motors suppose to get hot fast? The microstep is on the highest number setting - I think it is a binary setting - 125?

I once considered a CNC conversion of my BusyBee combo mill-lathe, even going as far as buying some servo drives and ballscrews. I ended up abandoning the project because of the required work in setting up ballscrew drives and VFD motor control. The rack and pinion arrangement in manual lathes has too much backlash for CNC, and I found the same problem existed in the quill feed for most manual...

Looks like it will work fine, did you make those cylinders or buy them? I am thinking that while it is really cool and obviously works fine you were doing fine before with just the electronics setup....? I have recently had a new idea that I am kinda working on to make a power drawbar with the same linear actuator. I will post here information once I have a working prototype. I am hoping this ...

The Lathemaster has 2 HP vs 1 1/2 of the grizzly, 1920 rpm vs 1512 and a little more y travel. A powerfeed and stand are available and would be a little cheaper than the grizzly. Sold out at the moment but they have gotten good reviews. The grizzly is good quality and already has all the extras with it. If I was looking to CNC sometime, I'd go lathemaster as the powerfeed wouldn't be ...
