Hi Bob Been following you with interest. Thanks for the idea of using an old parallel switch box as an interface - brilliant lateral thinking. I have ordered one of Arturos C10 after much searching the electronics to build the interface was about the same as CNC4PC have been listing the C10 on ebay. No doubt I will have to pay import duty but is still a bargain for a ready made solution. Regards Pat

Open the chuck as far as it goes. Now open the jaws of a vise wide enough to let the arbor pass through. Set the chuck on this, have someone ready to catch the arbor. Now use the largest pin punch (Flat tip, nothing pointy) you have through the open jaws. Hit it with a hammer to drive out the arbor. It's just a tight taper fit. CR.

Yes the head attaches to the ball screw thru the slot. I got most of my steel for free from my work. But check out SpeedyMetals.com this is where I get all my stock for different things.

When you built the components, did you put in any kind of webbing to add rigidity, or is it just boxed? Also, when I looked at htat link you gave for the rails, I found the width of the various rails, but I didnt see where it tells how long each rail is available in. DO you have to contact them to find out the available lengths?

Hoss, the rf45 community is thrilled to have you lining up to start innovating on our machines! Fwiw, these mills are heavy. I have the obligatory engine hoist, but I've also found an inexpensive scissors (die) table is a real handy thing to have around the shop. They aren't that expensive if you look around. Cheers, bob w

Hi grf, you might want to have a look at this thread: http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88540 - the Weiss machines seem to be very similar to the BF20/BF30. I've just bought a BF30 equivalent a few weeks ago, and I'm very pleased with it so far.

Nice work!, and to answer your question about the spindle, yes you can tun it off/on, you will need a bob to do it. I used a multifunction from cnc4pc, it is the only one I have expeience with but I love it!! no more standing waiting for the part to finish and then turning off the router, now I just load the gcode hit cycle start and walk away and do something else.

I used 15mm linear rails on my custom built mill. If you have a choice and can afford it. Go for the linear rails. Much smoother and lubrication is easier. These are what all the big boys use, so that must tell you something.

Don't forget that you will spend at least that amount again in end mills, fly cutter, vise, parallels, drills, tool holders, chuck, clamping set, measuring equipment, angle plates, coolant, lamp, boring head, etc.
Then you pay that amount again for the Gecko G540, PSU, three motors, ball screw conversion, belt drive head etc. The fact you are here means you will no be able to resist the ...

The diameter of the quill cylinder on my Weiss WMD20/25L ( like a BF20 ) is 44mm. It has an MT3 taper but MT2 is the norm for WMD20Ls and BF20s. I believe it is also possible to get an R8 spindle taper kit. My machine is labelled as a WMD25L but its not really, nor is it a standard WMD20L. I think Weiss tried out a few of the WMD25L improvements on a stock WMD20L, and sold a few of them ...

Nice parts!
Could you make up a set of corresponding soft-jaws, and then flip them over and simply face-mill off the remaining stock?

Now all Mariss has to do is build an all in one drive system like the G540 only with a servo control and enough balls to drive a machine like an RF45 or maybe even a knee mill... I know I'd buy one... having all of it done for you and integrated into a nice box like that makes wiring up a cnc controller a breeze... peace

Hi whitehedr.
I assume you are milling for the large circular protrusion on the motor face. This is only about 1/16 inch thick. Why do you want to mill completely through the mount? You only need to mill a shallow circular pocket, and a center hole for the shaft.
CR.

hey travis,
I have a 540 and 650 roland machine and have cut alot of aluminium , first off I am not an enginneer and love these machines for the ease of use . I think it comes down to the basics of machining and finding the happy equation between the alloy , the cutter (flutes ,coatings , type) and then the feedrates . I presume you are overriding the presets the roland software are calculating...
