Booleans is the only way that will do this automatically but successful boolean operation is dependent on a lot of factors including the complexity of the object. Cut Faces tool will cut reliably the most complex objects but it will not fill automatically the hole. You have to apply Fill Hole command or use other tools like Append to Poly or Bridge. And the task of filling the hole depends on the complexity of the hole. If it is a concave...

Maya batch render problems
Published (2009-12-04 05:58:00)
Jesus. I just spent a half hour trying to get maya installed in Fedora 10 in a VM. What a nightmare - one problem after another. gcc and tcsh needs to be installed. check. then there's the four sets of missing libx files. check. then openmotif. check. then wtf. I can't get the installer to work. I'd like to just tinker with this but it just doesn't work. Is there a distro that just works with Maya 2010?

I thought I saw something using the camera's clipping planes to achieve this as well. I can't remember where I saw it but I will look for it and post it if I come across it.

Use a point light. The glow appears to be done in post (or all in 2D, in your example). You can also add glow in Maya, but it's tricky and not helpful in most situations.

mental ray - max to maya ?? HELP
Published (2009-12-04 15:33:00)
I was looking at the same thing the other day. I wanted to export some geometry in Max with MR architectural shader, to the mia_material in Maya. I thought that because the shader parameters are identical (not entirely sure but I believe so) there must be a way. http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=6&t=830684 I didn't have time to look at the tools proposed, or least I couldn't understand how I can use this tool to...

Maya Fur for Wheat Field
Published (2009-12-04 01:20:00)
You could consider using Joe Alter's 'Shave and a Haircut' as that supports hair instancing. You'd model your wheat stalk how you want and have 'Shave' replace it's fur strands with instances of said stalk.

Normals issue (I think)
Published (2009-12-04 06:54:00)
Those poly borders look fat. As in compared to the other geometry you have in that screenshot (below your inverted object). That would suggest to me that you've some weird stuff going on there in your mesh (or have really bad UVs with 'show texture borders' on.)

Normals issue (I think)
Published (2009-12-04 06:31:00)
Alright, so here I am in the middle of modeling. I use the insert edge loop tool and when I press enter on my keyboard (like I always do), the normals on a section of my model seem to flip. Note, I said seem to. This only shows up in the viewport. The normals appear perfectly fine when I do a test render. I've tried to reverse the normals and tried selecting one face who's normal was fine and selecting 'conform'. Nothing...

The rigidity transform is computed for the entire cloth mesh, not as separate rigid transforms for the different rigid parts, thus it won't work in the way you are using it.
Instead of rigidity you could use inputAttract: Make your input cloth mesh( the original, non-cloth mesh) animated along with the character, for example with bind skin. Then make input attract 1.0 then paint input ...

I think I've found a temporary solution by adding each blend shape as a character. I'd like them all to be the same character but can't seem to do that.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

I'd start with either 3delight (1st license free) or Renderman for Maya (30 day trial)

Hi,
There's a lot of things that could be causing the scene not to render. First off, what version of Maya are you using and on what operating system? (I assume that it might be 2009 being that I have had a huge list of problems when rendering through command-line with that version). Are you rendering with Mental Ray? What does the scene consist of? As it tries to render what happens to your ...

Perhaps the answer to this specific question was simple, which is to turn off the option "vis IBLe as Environment" under the IBL sphere shape node.
But I'm still interested in finding a way to have selective casting reflections per object.
Btw Maya and MR are both new to me, my main app has been Max, in case some questions sound lame.

Vray is super easy. It's just a checkbox, then you type in your gamma (1.8-2.2) only SurfaceShaders need to be gamma corrected.
mental ray is a whole different kettle of fish there are many threads on this, but basically every colour/swatch/texture needs a gamma correct node if you use it this way.

Grp the curve, parent constrain to the object you want it to follow, remove original group from hiearchy or remove it's constraint. That should solve the problem.

Create Text (Maya should support 2-byte Unicode). Or import an outlined illustrator file
