I hate getting run over by the hogs, but it is a nice challenge to try to defeat them or out think the driver. When you see it coming, best to stand still and not move until the driver has committed to a path, then move out of the way. It's always funny though when drivers are determined to run you down and just sit there doing doughnuts while you strafe out of the way. Sometimes it's fun to drive a hog towards someone and...

GWFL? I haven't heard of it...Steam is just the most convenient because no one in my area ever has exactly what I'm looking for. Besides that I'm a valve fanboy, so bring it on. Also I'm pretty sure microsoft has some of it's other games on steam, how is halo any different?

Old news. If you don't mind the technical problems that many face with the game, it should play fine with the right company. The player base consist mostly of those 15-year old noobs you mentioned, so it might be hard to find anyone who's fun to play with, though. You shouldn't blame Bungie in the first place.

Personally I've never been able to host a LAN Halo 1 PC game. However I have hosted an online multiplayer game that appeared on the Gamespy server list.
