No, you've got it wrong, I'm not back to where I started at all. I started with the router MTU being 1458. An initial tweak to 1460 made no difference and, at that point, I began this thread. The router's MTU is now 1500 (which includes the 28 overhead).

I suspect the answer will be no. of course it will, because to test a 1500 MTU you need to ping with a 1472 packet ! Phil MaxDSL - goes as fast as it can and doesn't read the line checker first. MaxDSL diagnostics Are your kids pirates ? Limewire, Bearshare, Kazaa, BitTorrent, eMule are all tools of the trade.

In reply to a post by meditator : Just out of interest, are there any of you using WinXP who are not using the default MTU of 1500? If so, which value are you using, and does it definitely cater for all the websites you use? Yes, as I indicated earlier, I am using MTU=1454 calculated into the Registry by TCPOptimizer. I never have any problem with any communication with any Internet destination (it's not just Browsers that it applies...

Quite a few hours, so have plenty of scope to search. I will use a walkman on AM about 650KHz which picks up the REIN on the incoming BT cable, so I have an idea of the sound the REIN is causing. MrKite

correct, there is a LOT of registry entries that do not exist by default. The code in windows will use a default value when they dont exist. of the top of my head there is 20-30 registry keys inside tcp/parameters that do not exist by default but are configurable. Of course that is just one tiny part of the registry.

In reply to a post by BatBoy : Should still be ADSL2+ though, I believe. Correct; BE Value, BE Unlimited, BE Pro....Doesn't matter; the connection (by default) will be ADSL2+. The only time this tends to change is if users override it in their own routers or if the supplied BEbox goes nuts and drops back to ADSL2 or ADSL1 (they're known for dropping back to ADSL2, for no apparent reason, but I've never heard of one...

I would have thought the existing sdsl line could be upgraded, all be it with some downtime while the upgrade is taking place. It could be the 'suppler' does not do upgrades and hence likes to setup a new line on the 2M service, test it, to ensure the service is working correctly and then pass this onto yourself. I am sure someone more in the know will reply IanD

Balancing and bonding are 2 different things. From what you descibe you would need bonding (MLPPP). You'd need to find an ISP which supplies this, there used to be a few but they seem to have stopped offering it. Dave

Graham, It should not cause major issues as it should work in the same way. The WAN assigned when the router connections, would be passed to the FVS336G. You then have a WAN and LAN sides of the FVS336G. So, simply assign one of the IPs from the routed block as the LAN address, with the correct subnet etc. On each of the machines, either via DHCP or statically, set the...

In reply to a post by oldswan : Can anyone explain the discrepancy between the router log and the speed test (they usually agree) and give any explanation for the seasonal drop in my connection speed. Stats don't look too bad. Impossible to say if the errors are high or low as you haven't given an "up" time. Sync is a little low for a 6dB margin @ 48dB. Have you tried the usual steps (removed the face-plate at your master socket and connected the router to the 'test' socket inside - if there is one)? This will eliminate your internal wiring as the cause of the slightly low ...

1344 is the speed the modem connects to the telephone exchange. Data travels in an ATM formet over this link, and the Internet uses IP format. There is an overhead to this, i.e. around 10 to 13% of the connection is lost in the conversion, so the 1344 becomes around 1189Kbps. Then due to the way BT Wholesale runs it systems, they have a fixed number of speed profiles, the closest...
