In reply to a post by GunJack : sometimes you've just got to keep badgering them to do it properly After almost 3 months of to-ing and fro-ing with LLU provider, they've had BT out now 5 times to my fault , and it looks like today may have finally done the trick (fingers X'ed, touch wood, etc.) and changed the pair from exchange rack to entry point (but without the lift & shift that last OR bod recommended)....

In reply to a post by PhilipD : Already done, it's called common mode noise rejection, which is why we use twisted pairs and is how the modem can reject the noise of distance MW radio stations. Common mode rejection can stop interference from reaching the modem, but once it's there, the only way that a modem can reject the noise is by not using those frequencies. This will invariably cause a drop in sync speed, because of...

Interesting; I thought it may just have been some random thing I'd come across. I don't know if it's an issue with Netgear routers, but they seem very sensitive to very slight power fluctuations. Our lights dimmed briefly the other week (I think the Americans would call that a power brownout!). Nothing was affected, except the router which was bizarrely sort of half-reset as it lost synch but the wireless stayed on.

Hi Weak distant stations no real issue, nearby powerful ones, it may be just about OK during the day. People can tell the frequency of stations from the bin plots, which effectively end up in a notched arrangement of bins. Early ANFP docs were concerned about AM radio being affected by ADSL. I agree and see the same thing, my point was that distant weak radio stations that appear at night are not the main reason for increased noise levels and...

In reply to a post by MrSaffron : What is reporting that the Internet connection is still up? At a guess you are talking about an Icon in the operating system that is part of UPnP and I would not trust that at all. Tech support I suspect are confused, since you are telling them the Internet connection is reported as working, but it is also not working. I'm sorry, MrSaffron, but who are you addressing? I am not assuming that a symbol...

Thanks for that - it helps my confidence as I can't get MAAF to spell out exactly when/why the charge could be raised but nor could I see what else I could do to exclude anything under my control. Today the phone has a nasty background drone (like the sound of distant propeller planes) which is a repeat of a problem of some weeks ago. I had to smile when I drove down the lane this morning as there was a BT engineer working at a pole...

Anything that can generate noise in the ADSL frequency range can cause it
So a treadmill, some low energy bulds, florescent lights, electric lawn mower, you name it, if it is electrical it is a possible source of noise.
Of course it may simply be a bad joint somewhere in the phone line.

this is a BE/O2 specific problem, obviously the way they have configured their equipment.
also I am not sure if your problem is the same thing, I dont think the problem causes a loss of synch, but someone on BE/O2 can help you better than me.

In reply to a post by nomadros1 : Even with a corded phone you can hear the modems syncing That should never be possible with a valid setup. That suggests a lack of filtering and would certainly explain your problems.
In the above scenario where is the modem plugged in and where is the telephone plugged in?

Sounds like you have a high resistance joint somewhere in the cable. Insist that BT come out to fix it, and don't accept their threats of charging.

Pingtest appears to use TCP packets for the testing, i.e. not an ICMP or UDP ping which is what you normally do.
Also I've seen it give a A grade followed by an F grade a few seconds later.
Open a DOS command prompt, i.e. in the Start | Run menu type cmd and press return
In the window that appears type

1344 is the speed the modem connects to the telephone exchange.
Data travels in an ATM formet over this link, and the Internet uses IP format. There is an overhead to this, i.e. around 10 to 13% of the connection is lost in the conversion, so the 1344 becomes around 1189Kbps.
Then due to the way BT Wholesale runs it systems, they have a fixed number of speed profiles, the closest...

I'd say the DSL connection is active once your modem and the exchange at the modem have synced (agreed a speed).
The internet connection will be available after the DSL connection is active and you have been "logged-in" to your ISPs network (to complete the link between your PC and the WWW).
