In reply to a post by XRaySpeX : Yes, I was mislead by the repeated " separate connections " as were others and we're still not sure? Can one of those filtered faceplates be put on a non-master socket or does it have to be on the master? I may be wrong.. but I purchased one a few years ago - and it fitted only the master socket. I assume, that's where they'd want you to stick it anyway - to filter...

There are microfilters in the appropriate places and I think its just my location and possible rubbish line quality effecting it, which is out of my hands. Generally then theres nothing I can do (unless I move!) Thanks for your help anyway guys, appreciate it

We don't have access to that machine, that's why it has to be done via the router. At the moment the only option we have is to kick them off the network, but we'd rather allow them reasonable use if we can find a way to exercise that level of control.

You might only be 1.8 miles as the crow flies, but according to your attenuation either your line is lot longer than that or you have problems. The usual rule of thumb is to multiply your line of sight by root 2 or say half as far again which would give you 2.7 miles. However, sometimes, such as for historical routing reasons,, your line may go the scenic route and thus be much longer. However, for the kind of attenuation you have, if that is...

They normally only fit the master but there are versions that will fit extension sockets, and the description is not good enough to rule that out. eg. http://www.adslnation.com/phpapps/catalog/product_in... Doesn't matter how far. All that matters is line length.

I am a little surprised by how far your speed is dropping off. However there are a number of factors at play here. As you mention WPA is more resource intensive than WEP, this means not only does it require more of the processing power of your router, it also needs more of the processing power of your computer, and more time. this means every packet takes longer to transmit. which increases latency on your connection. Latency can reduce the...

Thanks for your reply. I use a wired connection, the WiFi is as you say, for convenience for me if I want to use my laptop, and mostly for my daughter who has a laptop. She hasn't raised any speed issues so I assume she's happy, it was just me testing! I also use my PDA which objects to WPA2, so I am sticking with WPA for the moment. We don't have many houses in range anyway. The interesting thing is that when doing...

I imagine you're expecting to use WDS to do this. ( Wireless distribution system).
Do both devices support WDS ? Check their data sheets.
If not, you're screwed.
If they do, turn off the security and set each one up to use the other's MAC as it's WDS buddy.

Try the freeware TCPOptimizer on your XP machine. Quite often networking isn't well tuned on XP.
