Well my old system won't reach POST any longer, so I suspect the game is up. It's been turning off randomly a lot recently anyway. Heat was about 65c on load too, maybe the CPU just gave up. Can anyone recommend the best bang-for-the buck motherboard plus CPU bundle? I'd ideally like to keep things below £200. I don't mind intel or AMD. Thanks Pete

Is it a new Netgear or bought off eBay or something? What make and model is the old router? We can look to see if you can get stats using that for comparison. These would be useful even though we know you get the proper speed, in order to see what else is different. In reply to a post by JonRennie : One of my colleagues recently found a Cisco router on our network that has an uptime of over seven years...we currently have a challenge running to find one with a longer uptime although with over 30,000 devices it's a big job (unless you cheat!). Assuming these are from the new netgear device, seeing data from the old modem would help too. A long line with a high target noise margin most likely. I would expect you to be running faster, but to be honest it may simply be you have a Netgear router that does not like your line. Seems a bit of a bodged way of extending the line to me. What i would suggest is to wire up an extension socket to the next room from the current socket. For the distance involved it will make sod all difference to the line - though just connect via terminals 2 and 5. Get a suitable surface mount pattress box from your local DIY store or electrical wholesaler - no need to bury it in the wall. To make the install tidier ditch the dangly...

Hi
Why not get a 1GByte switch, this will effortlessly handle the internal traffic, and then also connect to the switch your existing router for routing out to the Internet. The offloading of traffic may make it less prone to problems and if not, you have a wider choice of ADSL routers as you don't need a Gigabyte switch on it.
I don't think any domestic ADSL router could be ...

There are two possible problems occurring at the moment on O2 LLU connections using several Netgear 834 models.
One problem is a loss of routing causing Page Not Found. If your son is not needing any routing whilst gaming for example he would be fine.
When you say you are unable to connect wired to the router when this happens, if you use the link given on the installation CD I ...

You would be better posting in the General Hardware Forum. This is for DSL hardware only.
Perhaps a Mod could move it for you.

check the wiring of the short cable and make sure the new one is the same. Pins 2 and 5 on the BT plug connect to which two on the RJ11 in each case ?
Test continuity with an ohm meter or a battery and bulb circuit tester.

First thing to do is check what speed each device is saying that it is connecting over the ADSL line.

What for?
Did you buy it cheap from someone or is it yours?
If it isn't sent back when a customer leaves O2 they charge £50.

Given the basic stats you've quoted for your line, are you simply trying to ignore the laws of physics? Perhaps you've simply got to accept that, with you being on a long, noisy line, your router needs to run at a slower speed than at present, to cope with the noise. A 10dB margin isn't much at all if you're on a line that regularly suffers noise. Increasing that margin by using a utility ...

I don't (yet) have a 2820 router .....
..... but, the stability on my 2600s is rock solid.
You could also use Mobile Broadband as a fallback with the 2820.

I suspect most people would use an 8 port Gig-E switch and a 4 port router, as the VM cable doesn't need faster than 100M the router need not be Gig-E.
There is a VM cable section that might find someone with one.
