Dropped right down to abysmal speeds at about 5pm, and no doubt it'll remain there until about 11 / 11:30. Sort it out AOL!

The only element of iPlayer I can use is the radio at 48Kbps AAC, but it still comes up with the 'too slow to play this' warning from time to time. The speed test here suggests that it would be barely enough for 300Kbps iPlayer video functionality. http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/1... I have same problem with my broadband; the connection is lost after few minutes. I have been adviced by BT that because they are doind 21CN upgrades and unfortunately copper wire cannot sustain stability on such speed. I have been told that since this recent upgrade BT (Vodafone is my ISP) cannot provide me an internet connection beyond this service level (no connection during peak times) until they they replace the current wires with fibre...

You believe that? 21CN ADSL2+ has the ability to fall back to ADSL only speeds, and thus should be no less stable than what you have now. Time for your ISP to actually do something for you. People have been running ADSL2+ for some years across BT copper wires, e.g. BE so if 21CN is less stable its something they are doing wrong. ADSL shows up as an incompatible product. Maybe AOL was in the process of moving you to LLU and things have got messed up If router is showing a decent ADSL connection, i.e. what are the downstream and upstream connection speeds? Then chances are you are connected at the exchange and just needs account info sorting out Andrew Ferguson, andrew@thinkbroadband.com www....

Have you tried using a different MTU setting in the router? I have mine set at 1492 though others use 1450. When this has happened before it was possible to get around it by using an open DNS server, you could try that, does the problem occur in Firefox and IE or are you using a different browser? Check your settings:- Control panel:- Internet options:- Connections: Ensure never dial is checked. It sounds as if your AOL software is trying to connect by dial-up.

What's all this about "4th contract" and "usual retention reduced rate"? I have been on the 2Mbps £9.99 deal for three years (August 2006) and have never needed to renew my contract or negotiate a retention deal. It just carries on. So what am I doing wrong (or right)? Mine is non-LLU, if this makes a difference. Ian

I seem to remember whenever anyone contacted them about slow speeds in the evenings, they were fobbed off with the usual "rest your router" / "blow on your USB ports" advice. So effectively, they're admitting that there were problems with the evening speeds and they've now invested £1 million to fix them! It's a shame they couldn't have been more honest about it when people called them ...
