I think you've pretty much got it covered already as to why you are hearing crickets; I'd suggest that as you know it already, I'd take your own advice and try and get round those obstacles. In my experience, the job market over here is far more ruthless (especially in the sense that noone ever calls you back) at the best of times, nevermind just now.
