Basically, the question is more whether you are trying to build muscle mass/strength, or muscle endurance? Either way, the areas you want to focus on are your triceps, pecs, shoulders, abs and calves. Striking motions are your goal. Now, for muscle strength, low weight high reps. If you are alone, machines are fine along with dumbells for chest exercises. If you have a buddy, ALWAYS go free weights and ALWAYS have a spot. Nothing is worse...

Heavy Bag Weight based on?
Published (2009-12-01 15:55:00)
Most bag manufacturers recommend a heavybag roughly half of your bodyweight. So a 100 lb. bag would most likely suit your needs. If you have an exceptionally hard punch, you might want a heavier bag.

Heavy Bag Weight based on?
Published (2009-12-01 13:09:00)
Well, after the years of self loathing, I have finally decided to get in shape and doing some boxing training I think will help me lose weight, strengthen my muscles and get out my aggression. I've been looking around at reviews of equipment but can't find any that refers to choosing the weight of a heavy bag based on the person using it, only on how much "give" it has. I'm 5'11" and over 200lbs....

Welcome aboard Michael. Training at home is good to build up endurance and get some time in on the bags at any hour.
That said, you definitely need at least some basic instruction to get you going in the right direction. I would highly recommend checking out these 2 video's from Title. I own the series and its very good. Pretty much complimented everything I was learning at the boxing gym ...

Well one of my trainers is generally a Muy Thai fighter so he knew what he was doing. I was very sloppy in my form and generally dropped my hands way too much. I went 3 - 3 minute rounds. I was very hesitant at attacking and did a poor job defending myself. I got smacked around like a rag doll but I am doing much better sparring now than I was back then in April. It all takes time. Good luck to ...

Thank you very much for an essential guide such as this one. Boxing gloves do not protect your hands ? they merely stop you cracking your opponent?s skull open ? handwraps do that.
I like this method, though I personally wrap so that it goes between my fingers. It provides me with extra protection and simply feels better for me.
What length of wrap did you have in mind for your method...

I was thinking of taking kickboxing just to find a new way to defend myself but i dont know if it can affect my boxing performance based on stance and footwork but is it possible to adapt?

Hey Dave, welcome to the forum bro.
You said you tape your bag workouts. Would you mind posting one so we can give you a better evaluation and advice?
As far as increasing handspeed, do pushups very quickly and focus on exploding upwards as fast as you can. Fast movements help to increase your fast twitch muscle fiber, which will help generate more speed/explosion.
You could also try ...
