Too late to start
Published (2009-12-17 18:44:00)
Put it this way....I started in my late 20's and asked my trainer the same question he said to me "this very second is the youngest you'll ever be...you make the most of it". I wish I started at 18, but I don't think mentally I would've been mature enough to put in the time. Like the poster above said, if you want it, it's almost never too late and you never know if you don't try.

Needs Advice - Injuries

try stretching excercises. Those ligaments probably havn't healed up all the way and may never return to the same considering how long ago the injury took place and what was done after the injury. But in any case when you start working out really stretch the muscles in that area becuase when you stretch you allow essential nutrients into those tight spaces, which will help nurish the injured part. One stretch that comes to mind is take a...

Is This Normal?
Published (2009-12-18 04:54:00)
Sorry this is so long, but I am going to summarize the situation the best I can. I hope I posted this in the right section too, sorry if I didnt. I started boxing about a month ago, so I am still very green. A few days ago my trainer puts me in the ring against the best/most experienced guy in our gym and tells me just to punch at him (he cant punch back) so I can see how hard it is to hit someone with good defense. So right before we start I...

Timid in sparring
Published (2009-12-19 20:53:00)
Hey guys Im new to the forum. Ive been training in boxing for about 3 months now. My technique is ok but when I spar I am timid to take risks so I dont throw many punches. A lot of times I find I just counter punch the whole fight but when put under a lot of pressure i just throw my guard up. I know I should just suck it up and take risks since in boxing getting hit is always going to happen but is there anything I can do to help me with this.

You still have time. Look at a guy like Rocky Marciano, he didn't start boxing until he was in his 20's. Same with Ron Lyle, Nate Campbell, Larry Holmes, and Sonny Liston. In the amateurs they have divisions for people that are older.

I suggest you get your self a pair of boxing gloves find a willing buddy and go at it ,that way you'll get a feel for what you're getting your self into, getting up on a ring against a guy you don't know is the last thing you wanna do without any experience, because if the other guy knows more than you than most likely it will be your first and last experiene. good luck.

well what might have happened is that when you extended the right hand for a punch you might have missed and caused the muscles and liagamnets to hyperextend; therefore, you have inflammation around the joint. Best advice is to heat for 15-20 min and then ice pack 15-20 min two to three times a day until the pain is gone. MAKE SURE YOU REST THAT ARM or it will be a lingering injury for you. ...

Not during the fight I don't. Once the bell rings the nervousness usually goes away for me. But before the bell I try to think past the fight and it usually works. Also try taking deep breaths.

Gday guys, I've been training in boxin for about 3 months now and am keen to start sparring. Question is how i should be training for my weight class, I weigh 68 kilos (roughly 152 pounds) and am 6 feet tall with a reach of 75.5 inches. How should I train for the average height/reach of an opponent in my weight class? cheers.

I started boxing only 3-weeks ago. When i first went my coach wanted to know about me, my lifestyle and if i wanted to fight or keep fit. It was really daunting at first but as soon as you start training you forget about everybody else there. Expect alot of confidence building exercises, aswell as hitting the bags and sparring. Just have fun....................Hope it all goes well for you.
