fyi, I think the figures you used for the Motorcraft was the standard 820S. I didn't see an efficiency for the racing filter but my guess is it's more efficient. It does have substantially more media that the standard FL820S. The M1 is much more efficient than the standard 820.

I was chopping open filters before there was a BITOG. The tape measure is a crude tool. Over the last 10 years or so, I have seen a steady decline in the amount of media in the lower priced filters I have used. It is possible less of a better media is OK. Unfortunately with the Ecores, change in ownership of Purolator, and who knows what else, I am afraid much of the older information tells us nothing about the current filters. Keep up the...

OK...I removed the original pic by accident...here it is again Turns out that's the COLOR of the BROWN SEAL (Bypass seal?) at the top! No rust at all there. OK, there some IS fine rust dust around the SPRING..very little and only in that area. (You can also see a trace of it on the spring in the top pic at 4:00 right near the oipening).

That doesn't look like a Wix to me. It looks identical to the Made in China Parts Plus filter I'm using on my mom's Malibu right now. Hers was sealed like that and has an identical base plate.

I think those are TotalGrip, and made by Purolator--not necessarily to Purolator's name branded quality in all ways. But probably a good filter for cheap. Unfortunately they are discontinued and limited to stock on-hand. PowerFlo is the similar budget replacement (also Purolator built)

I notice a lot of filters with a light white what appears to be grease on them. Whether this is designed that way and intended as a lube for the o ring or whether that is a by product of the manufacturing process, I dont know. But I still put fresh oil on them whether I see that white grease or not....seems like simple cheap insurance to me.

It's happening industry wide. When I first saw your post, I thought about the 820 getting smaller because of space limitations. Right off hand, I can't think of a 400 application that needs to be shortened. It could be a cost-cutting measure.

Thats cool....I wish ALL the manufacturers would follow this lead. Maybe we could cut down on the fraud Chinese parts that find there way onto our shores that way. In fact make the sticker bigger and put it across the box opening so all the doofs down at Wally dont open every box they manhandle.

Sorry to hear that. It is good to have an adjustable oil filter wrench anyway so not that big of deal IMO.

The oil that reaches the engine's crankshaft main seals is AFTER the oil filter ... so if the filter was really the cause, then it's flowing better and allowing MORE oil pressure to occur when the pump is at max pressure output. I can't imagine any huge differences in filter's flow that could make that much oil pressure difference due to just a filter brand change. What filter were you running ...

nope, if you have the proper socket for your filter, with teh right amount
of flutes, there is no need for the nut.

AFAIK,NPN is WorldPac's house brand - I know Denso makes their fuel filters
on Toyota apps. Denso oil filters are more or less the same as Toyota's
90915-YZZxx series of filters.
