Thanx for responses.... I flushed the coolant (because of the oil cooler issue) and I am going to use M1 0W40 (Had big dillema between M1 0W40 and 5W40 Euro but after more research I think M1 is a better solution)

Hi, BigJohn - Please don't think that you can measure engine/component wear rates from the simple UOAs you find on BITOG. It is foolhardy to think that you can judge one lubricant against another in terms of engine wear by the same UOAs - it cannot be done There are many excellent 0W-30 lubricants - "GC" may be one of them

Thanks for the welcome and replys. I have to agree with you 2KBMW. I would never let it go to 15K between OCs. Even when its due for the free OC I intend to bring my GC for them to put in. I just hope they do and not keep for themselves. My family and friends all think Iam a nut case with the way I maintain my vehicles. This one is only a month old and I already have 2 people tell me they want to buy my BMW when Iam ready to get rid of it.

Questions like these are so subjective. It's hard to say. Every car,
engine, use is different. GC is a great oil. Is it the best 30wt oil, not
for everyone. Would I give it a shot, yeah.

I have a Mazdaspeed 3 which is another DI turbo motor. Problems with that
engine include heavy intake valve deposits and lots of smoking turbos(a
Mazda TSB claims that a PCV fix is in the works to cure the smoking issue).
And then there are the Audi/VW problems. This is all a roundabout way of
saying that I'm beginning to think that none of the DI turbos are ready for
prime time.

I had used Rotella T 5w-40 and Mobil 0w-40, both with success, in our 528i.
No burning, nor any signs of varnish when i replaced the valve cover
gasket. I kept the changes to 6 months or 7k miles.

Hi, OldBaldy - The heirachy of VW Approved lubricants is a little confusing - some have been superceded and others added IIRC the first "modern" VW Specifications were VW500 and VW505 at around 11/92 Castrol's Formula SLX 0W-30 (known as GC on here) was Approved to these in 1995 As I understand it VW502, VW505.01, VW504 and VW507 are the current VW Specifications. IMO it is probably best to ...

Well, I'm not an industry professional, but I have a background in Automotive design, and might be able to help. There should be no compatibility issues with seals or plastic components switching back to a conventional oil. Most European vehicles call for synthetic, because they tend to follow longer drain intervals, and a good number are turbocharged and tend to produce more heat. I don't...

Either one of those would be fine. However, one note about Valvoline SynPower 5w-30 - this one doesn't actually meet the BMW spec. BMW's literature has a mistake there. The one that is LL-01 approved is SynPower 5w30 MST , but finding it may be a challenge. Same goes for PP Euro Formula - it only seems to exist on paper. So, for practical purposes, GC 0w-30 and M1 0w-40 are your main ...
