RnR - Brake fluid? The cheapest that meets your specs. I don't believe there is a substandard one around.

I am willing to bet they are shared. Seems as if toyota went away from that old design and prefer the shared sump using one fluid.

Using the return line is best for flushing, as already mentioned. You really should make every attempt to NOT let the trans pump run dry. At best you can potentially toast the seal, worst case you can potentially toast the pump. To replace either, you must remove the trans, so keep that in mind.

Did they fill it with gear oil at the factory but recommended ATF for maintenance? Not that the engine can stress the tranny, but its probably not too big of a tranny to begin with. I'd use a full synth manual fluid like Amsoil MTF, Redline MTL, BG SyncroshiftII, RoyalPurple Synchromax...... Was the Mercon a Ford recommendation to squeeze out every last cockroach out of the engine, or MPG attempt?

I always use the Walmart closeout DexIII atf.

Bigmike: I feel exactly like you. I had always considered myself a guy who took care of my car but I never thought of changing PSF until coming to BITOG. Maybe its because several of my earlier cars had manual steering. At any rate I didn't change the PSF until > 70K in my Buick and it was squeeling like a pig. After a few ' turkey baster' changes (over 20 or 30K) it still squeeled. When I ...

I think if a tranny calls for gl4 that's what you should use. You'll see that with most front wheel drive imports with brass synchros, so I agree with you there that gl5 should be avoided even if the bottle states it's backward compatible. However, if a tranny calls for gl5 you would be crazy to put gl4 in, like in the subaru 5mt.

Z1 hasn't been out long enough for the fluid to be bad assuming it was kept closed & not exposed to extreme temperatures for long durations.

I'm sure it's a fine product that meets the spec. Make sure you buy the right Dot classification for your vehicle and you'll be good to go.

Use the DexronVI or a full synthetic DexronIII. AW wants you to use what the automaker recommends as they have multiple transmissions requiring multiple different specs. If it came with DexronIII, then any equivalent or upgrade should be used.

Local Napa here has it too. Have installed it a couple of times for family/friends. If you have an LSD, I believe that you will need to use some LSD additive. Its one of the few GL-5 gear oils that shifts reasonable well in a manual tranny too.

I've always understood the camry to share the same fluid, but they have a
seperate diff inside the tranny. This lack of maintenance on the diff, has
become problematic for lots of camry owners.

1. Use the search function. 2. If you would risk a $2500 trasmission to save $20, then why bother asking???

Nothing wrong with MTG. Did you understand the explanation? (Given to you in your other thread) Leaving empty bottles laying around and using that as a performance indicator is a not exactly solid science. MTG does not "separate".

What is the interval for the MTF? Remember, the amount of cash you could waste in a week or two on sodas is worth the step-up in mechanical protection.

If you are dead set against using the Z-1, probably Amsoil. It is the only
alternative that seems to please the users who switch.
