Question Re: Building Method
Published (2009-12-23 15:04:00)
I am bound to give some points to the other side of the plank/frame vs S&G construction although I like both in certain cases. My first boats over 50 years ago had no frames although S&G had not been developed yet. S&G got its start in Norway in the late 1950's in the form of plywood racing boats built in an open basket type female mold. The joins were made with fiberglass and polyester resin. Not ideal resin but,...

The free boat Phenomenon

I've written about the joys of yacht ownership on many occasions. It's a shame there's no way to do more specific searches, for some of the more colorful ones, such as this one MIA found. Yes, my balls were hammered flat years ago, I'm basically numb to it now and no I don't mind you quoiting me.

Commuter Boats: I really appreciate your thoughts. You raise some issues that I would like to explore. There is another 2670 for sale with a 1995 4cyl Volvo engine. From what you are saying, this would help the center of gravity a little. Having a sailing background, I appreciate the value of a heavy keel, what would you suggest? How could it be attached without perforating the hull with keel bolts. Something like a 2" x 3" X...

I'm watching these oooold movies currently, where their way of settling things was by hacking off body parts or by using brute force, those balls with spikes on a chain. What a blood thirsty bunch and they called it civilization back then already... The effectiveness of a small ball peen hammer is directly in relationship with the thickness of the individual's skull. In some cases it would only irritate or lead to a bad mood rather...

Question Re: Building Method
Published (2009-12-22 18:26:00)
The only "on line" reference I've ever seen to the Puffin was on this site, but I can't find it now. Even googled it, and nothing comes up. This design appeared in Mr. Rabl's book "Boat Building In Your Own Back Yard" - my issue is the 2nd edition and was printed in 1989. It's an 18' express cruiser for outboard power, reverse sheer, plywood over oak frames. The Bateau Classic 17 is...

"You cannot go on the sea with only one motor. Lakes (we call them dams) you can if you have another way of propulsion." Not trying to be argumentative but many boats routinely work in pretty bad weather with a single screw. The bayliner in question is no fishboat of course but a well found single isn't out of the question.

Sterndrive bellows vulnerability
Published (2009-12-23 12:26:00)
Ah, interesting. Sounds like Volvo has a leg up on Mercruiser in more than just reliability. Thanks for the link. I'm going to have to see how hard it is to design an engine compartment on a small boat to be sealed... obviously it'll have to be removable on at least three sides in order to do maintenance, since it can't be big enough to fit a person inside without taking up half the boat. I'm liking the idea more and more...

This is a lesson everyone needs to learn once. Drag one of these home, right away, the market is right for it. Select one that has obvious charm, resale value and isn't something only a mother could love, because this will only become a huge garden planter and you'll never sell it. The ultimate goal is to sell it. I know, after all this effort, you'll want to enjoy it and you should, for a while....

The Straight of Georgia gets gnarly. Not as nice of a boat boat but better
suited for a bit more weather are the Trophy series (The one I have been
around is the 28'. I have never been aboard, tho. you can outrun more and
they do okay in following seas). Whatever you do, you are going to have to
pick your weather. IMO, no 20somefoot sportboat can handle some of the wind
against tide scenarios ...

How about, don't use a Merc sterndrive? Or, just follow a good preventive maintenance program?
It is my understanding (this may not be entirely accurate) that it is only the Merc drives that are vulnerable to catastrophic flooding if the bellows fails. Volvos have a bearing assembly that, while not watertight, will allow only a slow drip from a failed bellows into the boat. Some of the ...

The only way I know of to avoid ethanol in fuel is to replace the people
who passed laws requiring it to be there, or tack a mast to your boat.

Hi Skope,
This 'problem' is inherent to all planing hulls with single inboards. It's just part of their nature- put a lot of power through a single high speed prop, and it will try to twist the boat around.
The best solution I know of is the one used by Gar Wood and other runabout builders back in the days of classic wooden powerboats. The hull bottom would be a very slightly different ...
