OK that was the answer I was hoping for. Since this thread has completely left logic behind, probably in some tractor or earth mover, I'm done here.

That's assuming one GETS money for Christmas. If I do, I'm using it for eating out, as I'm otherwise broke between now and New Year's (monthly paychecks still suck). If I'm hitting FLGS's during the week off, I'll need cash for lunches and such.

Here are two sites that talks about Kyosuke a teacher of english in Japan to children that made an earthbound card game and then a board game to use in his teachings of students. Sometimes I think that my giant shelves of nerdy stuff blocks me with women, but then I realize that the problem is going much deeper than mere physical objects. My hobbies of board games and anime haven't blocked me from getting girlfriends. Instead, I've taken to the hobbies because I seem to be incapable of getting girlsfriends. I've yet to see a guy who is so strikingly devoid of womanly company as myself. Last edited on...

It is always a good thing to learn new languages. I myself know Japanese, Spanish and a smattering of words in other languages. You should see my bookshelf I have 10 different dictionaries for Japanese alone. 1 Latin, 1 German ,1 Dakota and 1 Turkish as well ,but they were just for curiosity more then anything. I do have a Learning for Dummies--German, but that was just to learn some basic ...

Perhaps this is similar to an idea I have for a cafe where I would have games as well as refreshments available. Of course, being in Japan, providing Go and shogi would help to make the idea familar.

By the time you get them in your bedroom it should be past the point of no return. If you're worried about it take them in there for the first time at night in the dark. Once you get her hooked she won't care.

Why? It's dice-driven, play against yourself as one would do chess, or use all six armies and pick the one you want to win and try to defeat yourself. Otherwise, I have no idea of any solo variants as such. Let's see what other G's say...

I am also very lucky and grateful this year - received Alhambra big box, Catan Card Game, San Juan, Colosseum, Cuba: El Presidente Expansion. I gave my Wife the Carcassonne Rivers II expansion as a stocking stuffer as well. We had a game of Catan already - quite a good time, and it's nice to have a two player game when our friends aren't over. Merry Christmas!

Not that I wouldn't jump at the chance to play games with my wife (she's a non-gamer), I do understand the compulsion to count all of the bits. I have gotten many games over the years with missing or damaged pieces. While the game companies are usually fairly friendly and responsive to requests when dealing with those problems with new games, it's best to take inventory before playing. Oops -...

Quote: Each game has slightly different rules with Railroad Tycoon probably being the easiest for a new player. Beware, though, this game probably produces a new map every week or so. I'm assuming you're referring to Age of Steam, and not to Railroad Tycoon? Quote: Pandemic, and its recent On the Brink expansion, allow you and up to four friends to treat and cure four diseases before time...

When getting a new game, the first thing I do after removing the shrink wrap and opening the box is take a moment to inhale that new game smell. Then I immediately start pawing through the components, examing the game board and pieces and trying to get a feel for how it will look when set up. Then I grab a beverage of choice and settle myself in a comfy chair for a nice session of reading the ...

Re: Pennies, Nickels and Dimes
I thought this was going to be about games played stats. For cheap coins, you might get bingo markers, where different colors are different denominations.

I tend to put games in sleeves that I play all the time, e.g., the Commands and Colors series. I don't bother with most games.

Weight does not "measure" the complexity of game rules. It is rather a metric of "how much do I need to think during the game", or "do I need to stay concentrated throughout the whole game". Have a look at Go - the rules could fit on one page, but it has a weight rating of 4.0 (much more than Battlelore, for example.

I'm one too, my wishlist keeps expanding while there are still tons of expansions for my current games I need, and THEN there are all those out-of-print/nearly-gone games that get harder and harder to find the longer you wait, and then there's the fact that I love FFG, but they hate my wallet with a vengeance and want to starve it. I switch between "gotta catch 'em all!" and "ok, that's enough, ...
