i always drill my holes about .010-.015 under size and then use a reamer to make the hole the perfect size for my pin stock.

Cutting a burl Block
Published (2009-11-21 07:40:00)
Another thing that is real important in handle work is to have the set of scales as matched as possible. If the pattern is very tight and intense, sometimes you can get away with cutting two scales side by side on a slab, but for a truly professional look, you need to cut the scales from a single block and have them be a matched set. Once the block is split, you then decide whether to book-match the scales of use them exactly as cut. If using...

Last night I posted the first few dozen blocks. Looks like they just about all sold overnight. I was supposed to work in the gallery this weekend, but I should probably cut some more blocks. I have a bunch of sets of scales I will be posting this afternoon, then more blocks. Anybody who wanted some but missed out on the first batch can watch for the new ones this afternoon. Or if you'd like me to pick ones for you just send me a PM....

This noob would like the hand sanded blade. Just saying. I bet that it's a good'un. I have found that scotchbrite finishes are fast and quite nice. If you have the belt to do most of the work then the rest is a snap by hand. Hope I'm not talking out of turn.

1750 RPM is plenty fast for a horizontal disc grinder.
I am using a 1750 RPM motor with a set of step down pullies 1.5" on the motor and 6" on the Disc shaft so I am getting around 440 RPMs on the disc.
I use the disc for cleaning up tappered tangs and I wouldn't want it moving a whole lot faster.
Take care

Masecraft or elenhunting has it but none of it is cheap. Ebay occasionally has elk racks for sale. Axis deer horn out of Texas or Florida also can get it done(check ebay there too)

Nice work. I love BG42. Both as a maker, and as a knife user. It takes and holds a wickedly sharp edge.

I usually use glass beads mixed with aluminum oxide, as i find the aluminum oxide straight is too abrasive and the glass beads is too mild.

Fred is "good people". One of the nicest guys I ever met, even if he is a yankee.
I thought about trying Fred's idea of the bubble jig, but I figured out that a bubble head with a bubble jig is a recipe for disaster.

As far as I know VFD's only work on 3 phase motors, you would need a new motor to use a VFD.

I struggle with this as well. Being a new maker, there is always something that can be improved on. I think you will get to the point where you just leave it be, and if you really want it to be better, you'll build another with that in mind. If it's not a major change overall, then it's easy to justify polishing or sanding a little more or what have you. I'm much like you in the sense that ...

I wouldn't suggest beating it on your anvil. I bridge the high spots and press the kinks out. A serious kink is a problem and should be returned, but gradual bends aren't a big deal and don't reappear after HT.
M4 is a HSS and it comes ready to austenitize. You do not want to subject HSS to high temps more than once because it is a complex procedure to "reset" it. You get one shot at it or ...

Unky i made a mistake cutting a teak burl once. what i did is cut blocks going right down into. aA forum member took notice and explained why i got the swirly patterns instead of the burl sides, so if im correct you want to cut it as if you were taking a horizontal slice off the top. ofcourse you can manipulate the block to cut straight down as long as your cutting with the burl not against it--...
