Sharpening D2 Folding Knife
Published (2009-11-30 23:09:00)
D2 will grind similar to S30V maybe even a little faster but depending on Rc I doubt you will see much difference. The part you will see the difference with is when you pass the brown ceramic stones and start to polish. D2 seems to like a coarser edge better than a polished one, the edge will polish and get very sharp but you do a lot of burr chasing and the performance is no better than if you stopped around 1000 grit. My suggestion would be...

CQC, Yes, but I didn't realize you wanted to drink it . I thought you just wanted a food grade lubricant and were intending to use a very small amount . Which does not cause one to run for the nearest bush . DM

My father never taught me how to sharpen. He wasn't much of a woodsman... More of a country club golfer. (He did try to teach me to play golf.) The old shoemaker near my house, a Greek fellow named George... (his son and I were cub scouts together,) taught me how to sharpen a knife so that it would slide though a thick piece of sole leather smoothly and easily. I was about 8-9 years old. He would show us how to hold the blade to the...

they get a lot finer in the old carborundum razor hones. I think those are estimated by straight shavers to be 8-10,000 grit.

Of course we are mentally ill.Would normal people waste this much time on any subject? I do like a good micro bevel, and believe it will last a tad longer, and take a bit more abuse. I convex myself.

Take from me I've been through 8 strops in a month to find the best combo for me.
This what I do.
I went to handamerican.com (currently down sorta).
Buy a piece of bark tanned bovine and some of their LIQUID Chromium Oxide (the small bottle is a lot).
Go to your local Goodwill or similar (if you don't wanna shuck out the $)
Go to their belt section and look around for a piece of leather...

You might have to go to the Norton website to find the exact grit. I like the Razor Edge coarse only for the fact that you can use them dry. Most others come pre-oiled.

Mineral oil. Available at any drug store and most grocery stores. It's a laxative. I use it exclusively for my blades, as I try to avoid contact with petrochemicals as much as possible. It's very inexpensive, also has no smell whatsoever.

I use DMT 'diafold' hones for my BM710 -- they're narrow enough to work on the mild recurve. I start with coarse, then medium (red) and finish with the ultra-fine (green). However, you'll get a serious biting edge with the red; there's no real need to go to the ultra-fine with D-2. Bench stones work fine for me.

I was going to recommend mineral oil as well. You can google "food grade mineral oil" for some ideas as to where to get it. You can get it at drug stores. Mineral oil is interesting stuff - a by-product of petroleum distillation that can be consumed in small quantities. I like mine in the form of baby oil or WD-40, though not for internal use.

It is a bit of a harsh jump, but if you don't have anything else available, just make up for it with the extra strokes on the leather. Get 3000-4000 when you can.
You can get a super edge with the tools that you've got already, but the 3000-4000 will save you quite some time.
I go from 400 (chips n' stuff) to 1000 (minor imperfections) to 3000 (honing begins, knife becomes shaving sharp at ...

Carl,
I'm guessing it's like one of those "bell shaped curves" that they used to use as an example of school grades etc.
The vast majority will fall in the middle ground, while some on one extreme will never sharpen and never learn, and others will not be satisfied until they can whittle the pubic hair of a gnat.
I like my knives sharp but not enough to obsess over lest I fear using it ...

Yes, it works and works well. I like the 6 and 3 micron paste but much prefer something like hand american diamond spray for anything less. The main difference is the carat weight, the DMT paste has around 1 carat while the HA has 12-21 carat. The more carat content to the compound the faster it works, in paste form you can find amplex compound at www.classicshaving.com its a water based ...

Don't use oil. One you use oil on a stone it's forever an oil stone. Just use water with a little dab of dish soap to break the surface tension and you're golden.
At least that's my experience.

You should be able to get it at least somewhat sharp even with 600 grit if your technique is right. Getting a good convex edge is not always easy if you're just starting for the first time. The most common mistake people make is using too much pressure, if you press the blade down too much it will round over the edge. Just strop it lightly. The angle you use depends on the blade, but it ...

Just a little, don't clog up the leather. Go slow and over all lightly, no weight, no pressure, no strength. See stropping like a completion, a way to put some order in your edge. You ...
