This is a pretty acurate summary of my life over the last 10 years. IMO, the problem is that so many professors conveniently forget that they were once graduate students. Instead of breaking the cycle, they perpetuate it by taking the pent up frustration/anger/etc. that they feel toward their (sometimes long dead) mentors out on their students.
