The GMail app only checks for new messages every 20 minutes or so. If there is something specific you need that BIS can't deliver then try the GMail app, otherwise I wouldn't bother with it.

If the message contains an embedded image it will show without issue. What you're seeing is a message with an image that is a link. You will have to select get images in this case. It is a security feature that RIM has put in place. Do you get colored text? Bolded text? If so, then you are getting HTML.

It's a matter of semantics, but in your example, 'u' is the "short cut key". It is not NECESSARILY the first letter of the city name - it's a single letter shortcut key that you can choose. And it functions as you describe - it's a shortcut for switching between cities that you have already configured (as well as the @GPS location in the later versions). BlackBerry apps have a similar pricing structure as Apple apps.

The gmail app, allows you full access to your gmail profile. All your labels, contacts, chats, sent e-mails, etc. It allows your to search your e-mails as well. The only downside is that it polls at a hard coded interval so its not as immediate as if you had setup the account through the bis account.
I find that access to all my information greatly out weights ...
