Copied from the Essex email list [and just to clarify, posted by someone else. I have no connection with the record, other than a desire for the bird to be a Pied Harrier.]: "The "Pied Harrier" was seen by a wildfowler of long standing who is quite knowledgeable on birds and obviously is familiar with Hen & Marsh Harriers. He identified the bird from books when he returned home. His description to me was...

I don't know much about them either, but as a migratory SE Asian species, I think it has been mooted before as a possible/potential vagrant to western Europe!
Blimey! Hope it's gen.

Well, just outside the city, in the western suburb of Suresnes. It's been there for just over a week and is at Mont Valerien, a fortress on top of a hill overlooking the city and on the left bank of the Seine. I managed to see it today at my second attempt (tried last Saturday but without success). It seems to like the ...

Hi George
Reference the Black Spanish sparrow at Tulha (in one of the photo's on the weblink you gave); not sure if Brian told you, but we solved hte mtstery. It is not a melanistic bird at all; there appears to be a pair nesting in a pipe at the pumping station. they came out of it, and it obviously has carbon inside from exhaust gases. So there should be a second bird about too!! I guess ...

Oooh that brings back memories... Strange bird that was.... We arrived just after a cow had chased it through a hedge and it looked very bedraggled! Did eventually get good views of an incongruous bird walking round in the fields! Seem to remember some "big listers" were there at the time too.
Interesting set of records there Chris, but I fear they wont budge any UK records......

Personally i think its entirely up to the individual to make up their own mind on the credentials of birds such as these regarding genuine vagrancy. Over the years there must have been many wild birds put down as escapees and vice- versa. I live about an hours drive from this bird but have not bothered to see it, something does not feel right about it for me but thats just an opinion. I always ...

Thanks for the info Kent, perhaps we'll see some more large white-winged Gulls arriving in the UK over the coming days/weeks then.
Great (and gripping!) photos of the Glauc-winged Gull on your blog.
Merry Xmas
Cheers
