Are Canon about to release a new lens to replace the 100-400mm ? Just wondering as a chap from work thinks they are, and I might hold off buying the 100-400mm thanks

well the main one that can speed up focus is the limit switch ,i have the 500f4 and i have it set at the long end so it will focus quicker as birds tend to be further away than the minimum focus distance. If you have it set from the closest to infinity it can really slow focus down as it will rack all the way through the focus . If you know your going to be close to the birds then pick one of the other limits . Rob.

Ignore the rumours, if you think you need the lens then buy it now.

Stick with the 100-400 , your basically dropping 120mm worth of focal
length (98-280 f5.6) , you will also loose image quality and sharpness.

Happened to me about 18 months ago. I too used the suppliers recommended by
Canon. I have 3 now which I keep just in case it happens again. I have
screwed on the new cover very tightly and it hasn't come off since. I
believe it is a common problem, there are many threads about this subject
on the POTN forum. The new Canon 1D mk4 has a different cover so I believe
Canon are very aware of this.

Though I'm a Nikon guy, I think this should be a great telephoto lens to use for birds....Another one you could think about its the Sigma 150-500mm OS HSM.
About the 50D, I dont know anything against, the only thing is the new one 7D.
Good luck in your buy.

If the dial works for everything else, maybe it is the power switch that is not working properly, and not going all the way to the "really on" mark, or not working properly when it gets there.
Actually, are you in a basic mode or a creative mode? I'm not sure whether you can even dial in EC in the basic zones, especially green box. Since I never use those modes I''m not sure, but it's a ...

Sorry to hear that Adam. When my 40D shutter went I was quoted about £180 but as it happened Canon picked up the tab even thought it was out of warranty. I know fixation will give you a quote after looking at the camera and it is then up to you if you go ahead.
Is it taking single shots OK? When mine went it focused alright but when I fired the shutter it would get half way through and then ...

I presume you mean the AF sensitivity? Shouldn't make any difference for static birds so no need to change it from 'slow'.

With your budget I would be looking at the 7D plus the 100-400 or the 400
f5.6. Some say that is a touch shaper. However most beginners I meet like
the versatility of the 100-400. Especially at some of the main sites like
Bempton, The Farnes and Donna Nook.
