Wasn't sure where to put this but what do you buy to put all your notes/sightings in? Is there a specific brand of notebook/diary that's good for this sort of thing?

I started birding 2.5 years ago, so easy to remember. It was Pied Flycatcher :)

what is similar to a Black Bird?

Hi Makemray, i think the first answer is most likley correct i can only think they are Blackbirds which as already mentioned may not show yellow beaks.

Weather Forecasts

Yes, that's the worst of weather forecasts: when they are absolutely not what you want but they are rock solid. Even worse when in the week when you are stuck at work the weather is superb for birding - like this morning - and its going to be rubbish at the weekend! John

God it was a long time ago. I think I was 7 or 8, but I distinctly remember id'ing a Treecreeper shinning up a mature Broom shrub in front of the kitchen in the front garden where I used to live. I was well pleased with myself.

Due to weather, I've been unfortunately deprived of going out birding this weekend.... Tomorrow I am busy and won't be able to get out, and ironically they are reporting that the weather will be nice tomorrow. Oh well.... I'll just have to wait until next weekend.

First bird you identified on...

When I was about 6, I was in the living room with my mum and asked her what the bird was on the front lawn. As my vocabulary was understandably quite restricted at that age I was having difficulty describing it to her. I described it as having a "Chess-belly" as I was familiar wit the game Chess. However, she kept replying "yes, it's got a chest and a belly" and after a while it got quite frustrating...

I use a small 'red 'n' black' notebook in the field, then write up neat in an A4 day to page diary when home, usually there's enough room to add a photo of the site/target bird and a map. I also record sigthings onto BTO's birdtrack website as well. I find this works well for me.

The great thing about birdwatching as a hobby is that you can do it as much or as little as you like.
Go ahead and try not doing it in the UK. Perhaps time off is the cure for what ails you? Bet you can't really give it up though - you'll still try to ID that badly seen raptor when you are driving, etc. If you bird with a crew you'll miss the social side. Birding finds its own level, like...

The choices are a little basic and do not appear obviously linked to the stated goal of increasing conservation awareness, which some obviously endangered species such as the Piping Plover might have provided. So my guess is that most members will vote to keep the Red Billed Tropicbird, if only as a symbol of something they hope to see someday.

Looks like a Common Buzzard, plumage is so variable in these Buzzards. A

Mine was also when I was six and I managed to identify a pair of Mallards that were wandering about near my home using the Observer's Book of Birds. I obviously got enough of a kick out of that ID to keep me going for the next thirty years.

most dreams are about fictitious birds:
last year, I had a dream, set in an overgrown garden somewhere in China. It progressed into a big park with lakes, and into an area like the London Wetland Centre. These are the fictitious birds that I remember (the names were either names that popped into my head during the dream or ones that I looked up in a book in the dream):

Heh. I think thats a pretty common affliction. Do you mean the birds depicted in plates? Or even the vagrants which are named but not associated with plates? Ive seen a little over 540 species out of it at this point.

Yes frequently. When they forecast a heatwave it's only warm. When they say it's gonna' chuck it down late morning. It rains at night.
My advice is to just go for it. (although it is a bit off-putting when you hear a bad forecast) But it's that showery at the moment it'll soon pass anyway.

I totally agree. There i absolutely no need to shoot these birds as there
is nothing gained fro doing it. It's a disgrace and I agree it should be
banned.

You're probably seeing immature blackbirds. They don't develop the beak colour in their first year.
And welcome to Birdforum!
