My sawdust is all mahogany. Any hardwood seems to be fine - I even got some amazonian purpleheart wood once which worked fine. You people across the pond swear by red oak, but we dont have that here. I used english (or scottish?) oak shavings from a whisky cooper which worked well until they started selling it to fish smokers. But sawdust was better - did a complete job with no lag time whereas shavings had to pass thru slowly. Heres my set...

Ah, the frugal Scots. Leave it to them to find a simple yet economical way to adress a problem.

Hi Everbody, Not sure if it's been mentioned (i havent looked through all the pages here), but have you guys looked at an MSDS for Eco2pure? It contains a "wood product" along with Aluminum Silicate. This makes it very similar to Magnesol (they use Magnesium Silicate) to clean the fuel through a molecular sieze-type of action. The Eco2pure is using Al2Si3 listed on it's MSDS(same molecular sieve action). The...

[quote]does anybody have a step by step instruction manual to making a dry wash processor?/quote] I don't remember seeing any vendor on the forum with step by step instructions; however, there have been many threads on the topic and many photographs of tower construction in progress. You just need to do a little research in this section of the forum. First, you need to know what kind of dry washing/filtering medium you plan to use. Dry...

I work on a farm and have access to a wood chipper and lots of varieties of trees for wood chips. We are building a 400 gallon reactor and are going AE (acid esterification) to reduce our soaps. It seems that if we do 2 "stacks" of wood chips made out of 2-55 gallon drums, we can remove our soaps fairly well. What are the best species of hardood to use? I have access to lots of Ash and Red Oak. Both are dense woods. Do I need to...

Can't really compare as I have never water washed. (ok once.) Here are the things I have learned so far. 1) Get really good at soap testing. I suggest for the first time, buying .01M HCL from Graham or whomever. My test are coming out wacky and currently do not rely on my ability to make .01M HCL. You already are going to buy the blue indicator, so get some standardized .01M HCL there as ...

Jehu, I am very interested in your tests, I brought some Ecopure from Filterteknic a couple of weeks ago, the stuff is brilliant, but if I can get the same benefits from a different source and cheaper who isn`t going to jump. I`ve added a photo of my own home built rig to use the Ecopure, it is easily scaled to suit most requirements, I only make 40lt batches of bio at any one time so this size...

I have heard it mentioned before on this forum. I think most here use either Purolite or Thermax. Better than that though is hardwood shavings or sawdust. It just filters out the soap & glycerine.

Wow, that's a new one. Normally you would wash glycerine and soap out of the thermax with methanol. Oil isn't soluble in methanol without a catalyst. However glycerine and soap are both soluble in methanol and to some extent oil. I would try to flush the thermax column out with methanol and see what happens. Probably would work for eco2pure as well. I have no experience with that, but I do ...

Well I searched the old messages with the idea that someone had posted a sketch of a system using 55 gallon drums. I thought it was Weldshop of wal1809. I remember posting a response or responses to some of the ideas the forum member had. For the life of me I can't seem to find it. In my opinion the main idea with wood shavings is to give the biodiesel some residence time with the shavings so...

Yes it will. It will also clog up quickly if used before the wood chips. Since wood shavings are so free to me, I first allow the BD to settle for a couple of weeks, then filter through the shavings and then through a 5 micron sock filter, then through the resin beds and final filter through two 1 micron sock filters.

The recommended depth is 24" dry media and at least that much again for expansion. If you are starting out with soaked resin it may or may not have already expanded. If that is the case you could probably get away with filling almost to the neck, but withouth knowing forsure how much use the resin has had it would be prudent to leave a good head space in case there is more expansion coming. ...
