I'm particularly taken with the theme of religious zealots who are able to dictate to the government how their tax dollars are spent whereas I'm not allowed to withhold my tax dollars should they be spent on killing Afghans, Iraqis or Palestinians. So where, exactly, is the separation of church and state in the US? I don't see one.

Ohio will continue to be a swing state. I didn't think we could have a worse Democratic governor than John Gilligan, but Ted Strickland makes him look like a real statesman. He is pulling down the whole Democratic reputation in the state and looks to be very vulnerable against a popular Republican, John Kasick, in the next election.

OK, Pete leaps in and possibly talks crap... But just to say that US politics confuse the hell out of me. My wife came very close to voting for Schwartzenegger last time round in California. Just because apparently the Democrat running against him was a complete arsehole. It's OK (I think). She ended up voting Democrat. And now (and yes, I know I should post this somewhere else) I have to vote Labour in our upcoming election. I...

Now, hold on there. I totally respect Dennis Kucinich's no vote, it's a shitty bill that will enrich the insurance companies. And Bart Stupak (from my own beautiful state of Michigan) added a bit of women hatin' 14th century horseshit by denying abortion coverage, his yes vote on those conditions should cancel out Dennis's no vote. It's a terrible bill, filled with pork and favoritism. But it's a start and we...

So the democratics have succeeded in getting the Health Care Reform bill through the 'House of Representatives' (with just five votes!). Great news! Media reports say that the Bill will now be considered by 'The Senate'. Al-jazeera's Washington reporter is saying that the fate of the Bill is still unclear. What happens now? Will there be another twelve month delay? And will the final Bill, if it...

QUOTE And who were the 39 Democrats who voted against their own Bill! What sanctions will their party place on them? read this to find out the 39 who should get steamy parcels of shit delivered to them... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/speci...care/index.html and a few other cool stats. Now we have to wait and see if Harry Reid has any balls and can deliver the 60 votes needed to pass the Senate. I woke up this morning shocked...

[un-threaded from elsewhere] I think there is an important distinction between freedom of thought and freedom of speech. You can think what you like, but sometimes you have to respect your (potential) audience before you say what you think. I also think that there is a big difference between challenging someone's opinions or beliefs, and being offensive towards them about their opinions or ...

Does anyone remember when the Democrats were the "red" party and he Repubs were "blue"? When did this change and why? I remember Carter being "red." His election is the first I remember. I tried googling this, but every site that looks promising is blocked. (I'm at work.) This post has been edited by emilysometimes : Sep 14 2009, 10:30 PM
