Worn out Speedplay Cleats?
Published (2009-11-18 09:10:00)
X cleats will normally be well worn at that mileage. Walking on them has nothing to do with wear in the areas that hold the shoe to the cleat. Keeping the cleats clean and dry-lubed will improve life. One tip that will increase the life in the future is to take the cleats apart and flip the spring wires over when they are about half worn. Also look at the adapter plate and check it for wear. If the cleats are digging a rut along one side, it...

Well, temperature can have a big effect. Most of the talk I've seen relates to running in the heat, with an "ideal" race temperature around 50*F, with times getting slower as it goes up. Since they have that "ideal" temperature around 50*, I imagine you also get slower with lower temperatures. You definitely need to take it a bit easier when you start out...

Are sure the spokes are properly tensioned and the wheels stress relieved? A spoke tensioning and detensioning could be making the noise. Also have you inspected the rim for cracks, particularly around the spoke holes?

I spent enough time in Houston to know I would never want to ride a bike down there. Seriously, the drivers down there are all nuts. And I'm from Massachusetts so I know a thing or two about bad drivers. I'd do a google search on bike shops in and around the area you're going to be staying, give them a call and see if they can hook you up. Good luck!...
