It is also the first Prime-Time final in league history (i think) so an LA- Chicago final would be poised to be the highest watched final in MLS history too. Surely that would be good for league exposure and make sponsors happy.

glancing through wikipedia, it doesn't appear that there are any third-party management groups in MLS. They are all either operated by the city or the primary tenant.

I saw it too. After showing the highlights of the game - which were fairly extensive, considering - they showed a graphic of how the past 6 " Supporters Shield Winners" had done in the playoffs/post-season competion. Basically it showed that with the exception of the 2008 Crew, they've all flamed out.
The "bald guy" as you say then gave a totally quizzical and perplexed look...
