I've never once heard of an ELR failing, but I suppose something could come unplugged. Again, ELR just covers the idle circuit for the injection pump. I'd focus mostly on resolving the underlying reason why running behavior changes whether you plug or unplug the hose to the vacuum pod in your picture.

I think that is there for the dual voice coil on cars equipped with phones.

I agonized over this for a while and finally did the fluid change in Feb of 09. I went with Valvoline Max Life Dex/Merc.

Shall we assume you are in North America? What was the part number of the old harness? You shouldn't have to do any modifications - should be able to lay the new harness right out over the old, same wires, connectors, etc. There is a footnote, for North America, to indicate that someone screwed up the record keeping on the part number break.

Yup.
You should be able to twist it off with a firm grip and some elbow grease.

Did you ever try to flush your trans fluid to see any internal wear? I flushed mine and found pieces of small metals which to me indicates that its on its way to go, .

There are very few computers in the W124 that affect the engine or the transmission. It has mechanical injection and mechanical spark.
Basic transmission.
Yes computers, but your problems don't sound like computers.

Tastes and endurance changes over time as well. I'm not so sure I would like to pour myself into a small sports car again, just for the balls-to-the-wall performance. I remember well, all the snide comments we young ...

Try following it and see where the other end goes. My best guess would be
that the car had it's CPS replaced and the mechanic or person doing the
work didnt want to go through the hassle of un routing the factory wiring
for the crank sensor and just left it there.
