4-matic?

Aha, thank you Kajtek1. I didn't know the W124 was part-time but those were the beasts I was thinking of when mentioning unreliability.

Sounds like the only bad thing about it -it is not diesel. Have the car inspected by good mechanic.

It will cost $150-250 to replace a key and it's only possible at dealers. People who own S-class Mercedes should never be in the position of asking the cost. New ones or older ones.

For us that would be an illegal combination, and with a good reason. You are not saving 50% if you buy only 2, if you put all 4, the summer tyres are not going to wear out while you have the winter tyres on.

Those are definitely dealer figures. I could see you needing the brakes and brake fluid, but the springs and downpipe bolts sound like a BS thing to me. As for the seal, do you see anything leaking from the car?

I located an engine for $1,400 with 188,000 km on it (how I can verify the mileage, I have no idea) but again, it is the labour that takes the cost up over $3,500. My feeling is to part the car out. Thanks everyone for your advice!

Um, he does not have them in stock. If he only cared about selling me tires and not continuing a very good relationship why did he suggest only selling me two instead of four? And why is he suggesting the cheapest tire he can knowing full well that I own a MB and he could probably try to put one over on me. Why? Because he is an honest business person that's why. Maybe dealing with 99.9% chevy's and the like he just doesn't know...

These are very nice cars but also very complicated and expensive cars and I suggest you'll in the long run be happiest buying one from a Mercedes dealer, even moreso a CPO car. Mercedes-Benz - Home of C, E, S, CLK, CLS, CL, SLK, SL, SLR, R, GLK, M, GL, G Class

I think it would be the same way as the 240D when it comes to starting. The plus is that it is better on the highway when it comes to gearing.
Whether or not you should get it is up to you. I would do it just for the gearing alone.

Dealer or eBay, unless someone has a donor car that they can get it from
for you.

This is more of the legal issue you might want to take with the seller.
I think on this forum 100% members agree that you should not buy used MB without careful inspection.
Welcome to the forum and good luck with the case. Give us more details?

To my knowledge all ML imported to US were 50 states legal. Even if not, there is nothing wrong with importing USED "federal" vehicle to California. Used is 7500 or more miles.
It will have to pass the smog per its original requirements and that is it.
Good luck on the purchase.

Yes they are full-time 4WD but that's the extent of my knowledge.
I see you are in Sweden so a 4matic would certainly make sense. From what I've read the new systems are very reliable but the older ones are not. Since this system comes on so many chassis, narrow down the car(s) at which you are looking and then ask on those model-specific forums.

I don't know what years, but looking at the sedans section where the included models are listed: W140 came as a 350SD and a S350 TURBODIESEL. Looking at the W126 section, they list a 350SD TURBO and a 350SDL TURBO.

One possibility: there is a way to lock the trunk to prevent a valet or parking lot attendant from opening your trunk if you leave the black remote (after removing the silver blade key) with him/her. Put the sliver key into the lock and turn it the opposite way from what you're doing now. If that's not it, you might new a new lock cylinder.

What year / chassis? Where are you? What makes you think the timing chain failed, i.e. what are the symptoms?

In the engine compartment there is a pos and neg terminal, connect a
battery to these with jumper leads.

Dependable Auto Shippers (DAS) used to have an instant quote on their website. I would check and see if they still have that running.

Is it somewhere in Africa?
All vehicles on US soils have to have a plate or temporary permits.
If the seller just removed the plate -it should be somewhere in the garage?
This way or the other current registration is what counts.
