Free advice. Two things that I think are of paramount importance, take it for what'cha paid for it. Nummah one; make your chamber fit your full length die..... or vicey varsey. If you already have the Redding FL bushing die then have PPG make a reamer from it. Assuming that you DON'T already have the die....... then just get the gun built, fuh'GEDDAbout the Redding mess and call The Bros. Harrell. >>...

ppc on a 308 bolt face
Published (2009-12-19 00:33:00)
I have a Jerry Stiller Viper action that has the universal bolt face. 6ppc or 6br. I think the only difference other than the .473 bolt face is a bit longer extractor. I only shoot it as a 6ppc, but am thinking I "need" a 30BR. Got to keep the brain active... Donald

We're splitting hairs here but if I were to post a question about an action not working properly it would be on the Gunsmith forum.

sorting brass and bullet question
Published (2009-12-18 17:45:00)
I'll turn 700-1000 30BR cases from the same lot at a time. I sort them by weight because the winter gives me the time and I have to put them back into boxes of 100 pieces anyway. The variance in any one box is generally not more than 0.3 grains, which is little in the total scheme of things. As for measuring and weighing bullets, I leave that to Randy Robinett or Del Bishop. They have the better instruments and are better at measuring and...

Glass VS Wood stock??
Published (2009-12-17 10:19:00)
Keep in mind, what many refer to as a "wood" stock is not your grandpa's wood. Many of these are concoctions of Carbon Fiber, or some similiar material, laminated together with some sort of light weight wood. They are, in reality, more closely related to a synthetic stock that what the vast majority of the shooting public calls a "wood" stock. These have become quite popular in the past five or so...

have you tried contacting some of the commercial automated press manufacturers. I would think that their carbide base dies could be ordered to be used as a pass thru die.

I struggled with the 6 Beggs and finally put the PPC barrel back on.
Not what you wanted to hear.
I then struggled with the PPC...............(Gene just went "Wheeeewww")
I found some gunhandling issues that I'm trying to overcome, and a stupid scope issue and hope to get the shooter back into the game.
I'm gonna get that Beggs barrel back on there and start messing with it ...

Several wood stocks are in favor right now but I have never been to a shoot where they were anywhere near the majority in many years of Benchrest shooting.

Hey guys,
I was wondering if I should neck turn before or after necking 300 WSM brass down to 7mm. I will be necking the cases down in increments with a Redding neck sizer. Also, this will be for a .314" neck 7/300 wsm chamber.

Here is a spreadsheet that I made several years ago. Pretty simple - take a random sample of your cases (50 or so) and weigh them. Enter the mass in the spreadsheet, then change the % at the bottom to whatever % of the STD you want. Higher the %, the lower the tolerances. The spreadsheet will tell you which cases to keep and which ones to save for later.
From my little experience - ...

By all means call BAT and explain your situation. I'd be surprised if they don't fix any problems or and answer any questions. If you do not have the action mounted in a stock it will feel harder to operate than it does when mounted in a stock.
As to the Shilen trigger, how it sets is a function of that trigger and how you adjust it. It is not a function of any action it may be placed in. As...

Sad to say but the day of a dedicated HV is near done. I see no advantage in adding 3 lb to a Sporter to shoot HV. The extra weight usually in the butt throws off the balance of a nice Sporter. Shoot the gun as a Sporter in HV. Very few have a dedicated Sporter that they dump to shoot a HV. Two that come to mind that have a better HV than a Sporter are Tony Boyer and Dennis Thornberry. I have a ...

Boy, that's a mouthfull of questions
OK, the 6PPC USA and Dwight Scott's 6PPC are quite different. (Although Dwight scott PPC's don't all interchange either I'm guessing.... if yours is built on a Redding S die) Different enough that a PPC USA will NEVER be competitive and Dwights guns will always be. 6PPC USA brass is made and headstamped thus, while real 6PPC's are formed from .220 ...
