I'd second the motion to ditch the tung oil unless it's the only thing you're going to put on. Remember also that many tung oil products are not 100% tung oil. There's no telling what additives may be in what you are using, and that may contribute to the problem. I'd agree with Dick that a good sanding sealer is gonna help you under the HUT wax, and I'd also sand down a bit finer than 400. Use only a...

I got this set.. Claims to be HSS.. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=47066 I think it was a staple I found in the wood that dulled it.

Sycamore should cut fairly well; it's not a softwood - it's harder than poplar (it may be punky) .. Be sure that you are cutting "down hill" on the grain. Speed isn't got to make all that much difference. Think about it - does the speed of a cabinet scraper across affect the finish? Nope. It's the angle, the relationship to the grain and the edge (burr). Same for a plane - a jack plane will do the same as...

Yes, both bars at 2650 RPM. I suppose the oil could have prohibited the wax from sticking. But it looked so darn good when I took it off the lathe that I nearly took a bite out of it. I don't know why the shine would slowly disappear -- unless I wonder if the oil wasn't completely dry...

I have used the Hut system quite a lot without any problems. I think your problem is the tung oil leeching out. I use Mylands cellulose sanding sealer which cures very fast.

Rockwell Jawhorse for Outboard...

If anyone is interested, I snapped a couple pictures of the SS set-up for outboard turning. It is a little hard to see because of the cluttered background, but the chuck is positioned far enough out to give a swing of about 32" - way bigger than I'd ever even think of attempting.

Very nice. I keep telling myself to participate in those pen swaps, but, I can't help thinking whoever would get a pen from me would be shortchanged. I've seen some of the pictures posted over at IAP; my skills are not at that level.

A 12 year old just taught me how to make a Celtic Knot. Very simple. Love his shop, evidently his dad is a wood worker. I couldn't tell if a cut was missing. Like the idea of now cutting all the way through the blank. Tom

I havn't used the Hut finish but I can think of perhaps a few things. 1) did you use both bars? ( had to ask this one) 2) what speed did you spin your lathe at when applying? ( it needs to build enough heat to melt the finish into the wood) 3) could the tung oil have filled the wood pores so that the Hut didn't melt into the wood? Anything I have read on Hut doesn't mention tung ...

Lathe tools can dull very quickly. It is not unusual to sharpen your lathe tools several times while turning something. Some woods are harder on the tools, too. How dense of a wood is sycamore? I've tried practicing with pine before and it has tear out problems. Something like poplar, for example turns well without tearout.

After having it sit around in boxes for a year I finally put my Grandfathers metal lathe together. It's one he built using a slide rest and tail stock form an old Elgin lathe. The rest he made himself.. (He was a tool and die maker) I'm not saying it's the best but it's mine and the darn thing works.. This is the old girl as it sat in his basement.. It may look a bit odd but it ...

Unfortunately, you're not going to be able to "brush on" a lot of character that's not there already. You can deepen the grain, but that's about it. One of the chancy things a turner deals with is whether the finished piece will have that character. This works in reverse, too, in that sometimes a piece reveals hidden character that you didn't even know was there. It's a crapshoot, and that's ...
