Not sure about the travel expenses themselves, but I don't see how you could claim them against your tax. If you're employed, the expense has to be "Wholly, exclusively & necessarily in the performance of your duties". If you're not employed, you have no duties so your travel costs can't relate to them. I suspect the travel compensation may be some kind of concession, as the normal rules ...
