R1100s Fork Oil?
Published (2009-11-27 17:43:00)
The oil (in mine) was red so I assume its ATF or similiar. Since all the suspension action is taken up by the exposed shock and spring its probably OK to just leave it in there unless the seal fails and some of it leaks out.

Ilmberger makes a rear hugger for the R11S, as does Pyramid. This is the Pyramid, in CF I had an Ilmberger, which is much more attractive, but there was discussion a few years back about them fracturing at inopportune times (like when you're in motion), so i went with the Pyramid. you need to head over to Pelicanparts.com, and get into the R1100S Tech Forum- much more focused info there on the 11S than anywhere else. word of advice- use...

Tire wear question - Page 3 -...
Published (2009-11-27 12:15:00)
After the ever popular oil thread and the reocurring tire thread, I think this subject (tire wear) which is a relative of the standard tire thread, is about third most common, or at least in the top five. All the answers for the left side wear are contained herein, some of the responses are just plain wrong, but those are easy to figure out.

Start-Up Noise

Lots of folks say this is just a nuisance, but there have been more than a few cases of broken cam chain rails on these bikes. I can't imagine that having the chain slapping that rail is good for it.

Reserve Indicator
Published (2009-11-26 12:40:00)
I took the tank off again today to examine the float switch. Indeed that was the problem. Inside that white cylinder is a float that contains a small magnet and moves up and down on a center post. Next to the post is a magnetic reed switch. When the float comes near the magnetic reed switch to opens the circuit and when it sinks down as the fuel drops it closes the circuit and lights the reserve light. When I applied 12 volts across the switch...

Take a close look at HyperPro. They last alot longer before a rebuild is needed compared to the more expensive, more popular brand owned by Yamaha. Some kind of Swedish sounding name, I think. Saved over $400 on a set for my 1150 Adventure and they are every bit the shock as the big name brand.

I have a 28" inseam and with the stock seat or a Sargent, I have no problems flat footing my R1100RT with the seat in the middle position. Such is not the case with my Corbin seat, comfortable, but wider, pushing my legs further out to the side and tip toeing the ground.

Well, here's a thought. I've often wondered if a second O2 sensor were placed on the right exhaust and the original moved to the left pipe what might happen. If the two were wired in parallel this might narrow the mixture reading by "seeing" the richest/leanest mixture of the two pipes. The output of the two could be isolated using two diodes. I'm not sure what it would do, but I bet the surge ...

The factory manual CD is a little better, but I have to say leave it to BMW:
p31.7 - the note says no fork oil change is needed during service, the fork is "maintenance free."
Getting the oil out per the manual requires removal of the slider and dumping it out.
The quantity of oil to be installed is 170 cc.

I have an 2004 1150RT but, it's probably the same. the gas tank back lower right hand mounting bolt is slotted. Use it for adjustment. Once i found the correct position I punch marked the washer correct position so I can put it back the same every time. If you don't get it exactly the same the shark fins off the engine may need to shift also. Start the screws from the side fairing into the ...

Is it worth a burned valve to you? It might be just fine then again if its not OK it could be real trouble. What other people do means nothing. They might get away with it.

The short answer - probably normal.
Long answer - going straight you are steering left because the bike pulls right all the time. The primary cause is the weight imbalance in the bike. It is heavier on the right than left (final drive, driveshaft, most of swingarm, and more of the transmission than not). It can be compounded by the crown of the road.
Your extra weight in the right ...

just a nuisance noise. happens because the older style CCT is oil pressurized, and the oil in it is not yet pressurized at start up.
replacement kit for the new & improved version (the only one you can buy right now) is about $25 or so, iirc. easy DIY job, if so inclined.

Does the engine turn over? If it won't turn over, you have the symptoms of a bad battery. If there's not enough juice, the fuel pump won't push gas. If you're running the original battery, it's probably ready for replacement.

You most likely did damage the sensor by " backfeeding" 12v into the circuit. It is possible to get the float rod in a bind, but not as probable as your first guess is. I would pull it all apart one more time anyways to see for sure. Doesn't sound good though.

As long as the transmission is shifting normally it should continue to do so. The classic problem with these things is popping out of gear. Along with mocha colored oil. (which as I understand it is associated with bad bearings) Yours is doing neither. Those marks might be something that happened during the manufacturing process. (Remember, BMWs are like sausages: tasty but dont watch them ...
