R80ST has nikasil cylinders, right? Recheck with Ted Porter about the proper way to hone those cylinders. Ted offered quite of bit of information on the differences between iron cylinders and nikasil in terms of honing and the type of material that makes up the hone.

R100RT fuel tank - how full is...
Published (2009-11-26 06:44:00)
Yes! With heat, gasoline expands quite a bit! So if you fill it on a warm day, and let it sit in the sun, the gas literally expands inside the tank, so there is an allowance for the vapor to escape, and then the expanded gas must run out somewhere: through the little hole and probably onto the top of your motor....

EBC Brake Shoes

According to the confirmation e-mail, I have a set of these coming across the country at the moment: EBC Organic Brake Shoes 1 $48.69 http://www.bikebandit.com/ebc-organi...=5804&t=1&td=1 from BikeBandit.com. These are for a 1988 R100; just navigate to the 1978 listing to see whether they have what you want.

R100RT fuel tank - how full is...

The little holes were probably added so the owner could force a little extra fuel into the tank. I have done that. I fill to the lip unless I intend to get on and head down the highway and burn fuel before it can really expand much. It allows maybe .25 gallons (10 miles) more on a R1150R. Probably less extra on an RT because it has a shorter neck in that fill cap spout arrangement.

post a pic of your airhead -...
Published (2009-11-18 17:27:00)
Last but not least, here's a pic of my 1972 R60/5, my first BMW, taken about 10 years ago. About 5 years ago I pretty much tore it apart, powdercoated the frame, etc. and have very slowly been putting it back together again. Unfortunately, my obsession with the airheads dictated that I move it out into my crowded storage shed since there was no longer any room in my 1/2 of the garage for another bike. I figure I'll end up with 3...

R100RT fuel tank - how full is...
Published (2009-11-26 06:24:00)
Thank you! I just keep noticing little things about this bike and thought I would ask. My first K bike had been modified to allow squeezing every drop possible into the tank. As the cap on this airhead screws in (as opposed to a snap-latch) the neck cannot be modified the same way. I had not thought about fuel expansion. At the moment we are experiencing cool weather so shrinkage is the more likely scenario sitting in my carport. Either way...

I've got the cheesy BMW/Krauser bags on my 78 R100/7... No support available any more for them, no keys available, nothin'... I know others swear by them, but in my opinion, they are flimsy...but, they are what they are, and I'm not gonna spend a bunch bux replacing them!

You should have a bracket that attaches to the rear fender, I believe it is part number 46 62 1 231 598 or 46 62 2 303 274 .

Hey Annapolis,
I like the bike in red. Looks good and sounds like you learned a bunch. Nice job!
ps. good luck with selling the old fairing. If you want to make some really big bookends, I've got one you can have.
You know the way, and "we'll leave a light on for ya."
Now that you are bringing this to a conclusion, maybe it's time for a new project. Something different, hint......

Shoes, as in rear drum brake? A good brake shop should be able to put "modern" brake linings on the old shoes. Try Vech at Bench Mark Works if nothing else.
Or pads, as in front disc brake?

It's pretty common, and usually doesn't mean anything. 4th is the fastest (teeth per second) straight-cut gear.
Did he change something else that might have made him suddenly start hearing this? Different helmet, earplugs, etc.?

Great bike. You're doing the right thing. Bring it up to date maintenance wise and you'll be able to ride it pretty much worry free. Those white saddle bags really should be on a "Motosport" model. I'll bet someone here will be willing to trade you a set of black ones for them.

Except for a /5 horn, the control switches don't ground at the bars - they pass current from one wire over to another wire, which takes it where it needs to go - usually.
