An '81 would have the ICM ignition, which uses the 1.5 ohms coil(s). You can use Dyna coils, BMW coils, Harley coils, etc.

Welcome Pickle, You've got the makings for a fine machine there. Find yourself some good reference material ( BMW, Haynes or Clymer shop manuals). Airheads are relatively easy to wrench on compaired to other vehicles. Those bags, trunk, and fairing are period correct and have some value if they're in decent condition. You're about to embark on an adventure that will last you a lifetime and ...

I searched through the past posts and it seems that the 38mm is the most common diameter. If you have dual crossovers, then it's likely 38mm. I think the thing was 40mm breathed better for a single crossover but the diameter could be reduced with the dual crossovers for essentially the same breatheability.

Call Rick @ Motorrad Elektrik and order the Dyna Brown coil (it is actually orange in color, but the "Brown" coil is for the solid state ignition system, the Dyna Green coil is for use with points ignition). Cost is approximately 90$, and will include instructions and mounting bracket. Very easy to install. Your crack-o-matic coil problems will be over.

Except for a /5 horn, the control switches don't ground at the bars - they pass current from one wire over to another wire, which takes it where it needs to go - usually.

Ahh, getting to now the bike...isn't this fun!! 1. There was a recent thread on this very subject. Be sure it isn't locked. The key slot on my /7 is horizontal when locked; vertical when unlocked. 2. The left cover is captive due to the lifting handle. The right cover should be held with a small rubber band, bungie, rope, etc., unless the PO modified it to hold it on more securely....

I picked this up in Seattle as a parts bike a few years back- as I began to strip it out, it looked better the further I went. Turned out to be a lot less wrong with it than I thought, so I started putting it back together, tweaking as I went- traded some work for the S fairing, complete with instruments n harness, and- can you believe- already color matched to the bike! Has about 90k on it...
