I just had body work done to my 2000 528i at a place called Hennig Collision in Bellemore, Long Island. The owner, John was as nice and helpful as could be and did excellent work. I went to several other body shops , including a BMW body shop on the south shore before meeting John. Since my front bumper had to be replaced I wanted to put on an M-5 bumper. My 528i came with the M package so I knew that the M-5 bumper would look great on it....

Pretty much check the basics. Check all the fluids and make sure their condition is good enough so it won't freeze. Over inflate the tire pressure so the tires won't get flat spotted (unless you plan to jack the car up and put it on jack stands). And depending on the year of the car and what accessories it has, you may or may not want to disconnect the battery....

If the car is still under the factory warranty, keep bringing it back to the dealer. They will eventually find it. Noises like that are very difficult and really time consuming to find. Sometimes you think you know what it is, spend hours taking stuff apart, adjusting stuff, placing felt tape around things. Road test the car again to either find the noise gone, possibly worse, or sometimes...
