The New 5 Series

It could also be the credit crunch rearing it's boring head (won't call it ugly, cause it's not, just nothing special). With sales dropping, they decided they needed an unprovokative car, unlike the E60 which got a lot more pepper in the media upon it's release, to ensure sales would be steady? (the E60 proved the initial fears were unfounded though) I have to admit, I hated the look of the E60 when I first saw it, but it...

The 1er's in for a new seat...
Published (2009-11-24 20:20:00)
The ride quality was great actually (although my brother still thought it very firm for a 'soft-roader') and highlighted just how firm the 1er is. Perhaps I'd been used to it with the ST but I can see why some people dislike the 1er with M-Sport and 18s. That said, it was lovely to get back in it last night and back to my usual tomfoolery on wet, greasy roundabouts. Also, in the BP station tonight after filling up, I was walking...

MINI with 120d engine
Published (2009-11-26 17:32:00)
I recall that this was mooted some time back but it seems the 120d MINI is not too far away, see: http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/245339/ Could be fun, shame they are detuning it to 150 bhp but nothing a chip could not sort Only concern is how much they will charge for it. I would guess that that engine won't come cheap.

this new direction of boringness (7er, 5er) in BMW design does not bode well for the forthcoming 1er.

Agree, but maybe a bit heavy on the front? BTW: 123d = 2000bar. Sorry mistake yes 2000 bar, a little front end heavy but for a...

Quite like our X3. Yep its no 1er for handling, but as a tool for the job its ok (prams, shopping etc). The ride on SE spec, 17" alloys and non-RFT is very good. Air con is a lot better than our Pre FL 120d. The Bluefin on the X3 made it respectably nippy and economic.

Styling just looks too conservative, at least in contrast to the new 5 series GT front end!

The New 5 Series
Published (2009-11-24 14:48:00)
When the current 5 was released, the press largely savaged it because it was so different. It became the done thing to deride BMWs new design direction, until, it became clear lots of people were buying it, and after everybody got over the initial shock most people then seem to love it. But BMW seemed to be stung by the initial criticism, and released the toned-down 3 series saloon, just when people had become accustomed to the 'new'...

It's a tunned up version of the 118d engine or the same engine due in the new 1er and 3er. I assume still has the cheaper 1600 bar CR as oppossed to the more expensive 1800 bar CR Piezo system on the 120d and 123d? A chipped 123d enigne in a mini will make it a little flyer no doubt!!!!

Still a lot of money for a small hatchback though, and you'd have to be a mug to pay £32k for a new one!!
