I highly recommend a compression test ................
Quote:
In order to determine if a rough running engine has internal issues, then a compression test is
highly recommended. This is a very simple test and you can usually rent or borrow a compression tester to get your readings. You could also purchase a tester fairly cheap if you shop around. Here is what a ...

There is a switch mounted on the bracket that holds the clutch pedal. Either it's going bad or your floor mat is too thick.

Check Engine Light Guide
P0400 - EGR Flow Malfunction
P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold
P0340 - CMP Sensor Circuit Malfunction
The P0400 indicates you have clogged EGR passages and maybe the EGR valve is also clogged with carbon. This is typical especially with higher miles. More info on cleaning the ports can be found here..........

The very first hing I would do is perform a compression test on all cylinders. These cars have a known issue of having burnt exhaust valves causing low compression. If you do have low compression, it's not the end of the world. These engines are easily rebuilt without removing from the car and will continue to save you
gas money and pay you back when you are done.

I'm interested in a stock instrument console with tach as well for a '99, 3 cylinder 5 speed. I've read so much conflicting information about putting in a stock console with a tach from a previous year or model that I'm not sure if it would work. Can I use the same
wiring harness or do I have to rig something up to make it work. I've seen them for sale on ebay but don't want go thru all the ...

You got to get the car safe on stands and get under the car and you will see the long rod and there are bushings where it connects to the bottom of the shift lever and bushings on the trans connection. Check for looseness.

Well, I say if you fix all the issues yourself for less than $1000.00 or 2 car payments, you will get another 250K out of it. You will also save big bucks in
fuel mileage especially when it's running right.
P.S. - You should never junk a southern rust free Metro!

Did you replace it with a new one or a used one. How tight are you putting it back on? I know it needs to be tight but no TOO tight! I used to have a bad habit of tightening bolts as tight as I could get them. The only good thing I got from that habit is now I am
Jedi Master of removing broken bolts an re-threads...
