An amusing side issue which I haven't seen any media other than the ABC pick up on today was an announcement by a Rudd spokesperson that the offer had been made to the Tamils on the Oceanic Viking that if they would disembark in Indonesia, they wouldn't have to go to a detention centre, because the Australian and Indonesian governments have arranged for them to be housed in the community up there, and their resettlement applications...

Female for "Mate"?
Published (2009-11-08 20:10:00)
gg, one of my long time associates does sometimes address her female friends as 'mate'. But I must admit she is the only female in my close circle who uses the term freely that I'm aware of at the moment. But "mate" does seem to me to be morphing into a non gender specific term.

John Howard was rubbished when he said that we will decide who comes to Australia and the circumstances under which they came. Now of course it is the people smugglers who decide these matters and it is making Kevin Rudd look very weak. Mouthing off abuse at the people smugglers didn't work, and now he has to start sounding like Howard, making "no apologies" for a hard line. And he has to...

Yeh on the news last night they 'interviewed' some Western Syd residents about it. I wonder how long it took them to get the 2 cuts they wanted of people saying they dont know what AFL is, or that no-one out there will ever follow it... It wont be easy for the AFL to gain huge crowds out there, but they are on the front foot. Rugby League is relying on handouts just to defend its postition, ...

I have always been fascinated by the reasoning people go through before they decide to have children. From a very young age, actually I was 8 and can distinctly remember the moment, I realised having kids was not for me. Since then I have wondered what it was that made people invite such drastic and irreversible change into their lives. Are women still pressured by society? Do men feel a ...

Actually Wayne, your message is misleading. There are thousands of scientists willing to speak out against the status quo in all fields of science, and they get coverage among scientists if their work stands up to the requirements of science. That means understanding the status quo and showing the data and the methods that you believe back your new or different interpretation. It's just not ...

Being heavily infracted on a regular basis , i also feel i am qualified to comment here ............... I actually have noticed a distinct lack of agro here of late, mind you i have also noticed that there seems to be less stock and trading help of late also ... Is this a direct correlation ? The more trading help also leads to more agro where different egotistical opinions clash ?...

Not an organ donor, make no moral judgement about whether folk deserve my organs or not. I understand that a dead organ is no good to prospective recipients - several hours dead at least anyway - but find it hard to believe there is legal justification for taking an organ from a living individual, even if the prognosis is grim. People do, afterall survive many years in non responsive vegetative ...
