Let's work one problem at a time starting with the wife's machine. If you shut down other machines does the netbook acquire an IP address? I'm guessing that your router is setup to just hand out a few IP addresses and that option needs to be increased. Have you gone into the configuration screen and checked that? What firewall and other security apps are being used on this machine and what's...

Wireless security is initiated by the provider. As a user you can't turn it on. Your choice is whether or not you connect to a secure network. Since you are considering a particular company then the thing to do is to ask them what kind of encryption they use. They aren't very clear about it on their site so it might take a phone call to find out. As a user you have done about as much as you ...

I think you can name the new port anything you want. Also make sure that you use your XP computer's name and your printer's name and not the words

command prompt. Type with an Enter after each line: netsh winsock reset catalog netsh int ip reset reset.log Reboot the machine. Any better? Ron

wireless network card, and also understand now that WPA technology is important if one is using the 802.11 standard. What I am buying is an USB "data card" modem from the ISP. I will be using it during travel. While travelling, I can't carry my DSL broadband modem. I presume WPA is not required (and probably ...
