Seems kind of weird to add the name "Concerto" when the only difference is the finish. Who knows? Maybe that finish sounds better. I HAVE read about certain finishes adding dampening qualities.

Some of the Polks have system fuses on the back. Do your Monitor 5s? If so, check the fuse; it might have 'popped'.

THose sure don't look like any Altec I've ever seen.. not to say the drivers aren't but the cabs and horns don't look like any I know.. but that isn't saying much either.. Even with that in mind, if the price was decent I'd still go take a look at them....

Yep, these babies were stuffed. I have found four different kinds of stuffing inside these cabinets. Two kinds of foam, pillow stuffing and something that looks like filter medium. One of the cabinets I pulled out all of the pillow stuffing that was packed in there very tight. This was blocking the port and probably had some effect from original design. I am a believer in going with how ...

The crossover caps in HD-88s are film caps, leave 'em be. Changing out the inductors and resistors probably won't do anything to improve the sound, IMO, but if you have too much time and $$ on your hands..... If the pots in your 88s don't respond to de-oxit, you will probably have to individually take them apart and clean all of the contact surfaces with Brasso or Flitz. Just be sure to get all...

I have a set of the FR125s. Five watts of SEP won't cut it with them, IMO they're really better with solid state. They aren't efficient, as you've noted, and can use a low damping factor amp to deliver the bass of which they are capable. In the right cabinet and with a little power thay can make absurd bass for their size. Mine are in BIB's, and can hit a solid 40 Hz in my den. What ...

Those were pretty good IMO; excellent clarity and dynamics. As an option the Eliminator was offered with a T-35 tweeter for better highs. The speaker's weakness is a lack of low bass. EV used to provide plans for the basshorns and around 1977 a pal and I built a couple and used them for our band, I think we used Altec 802s on 511s for the treble. They did the job.

Check out www.diyaudio.com - lots to read there regarding the design and construction of horns. Also, check this out: www.dcchomes.com/Gregsaudio.html . Greg builds midrange horns for Klipsch models. There are one or two things to be learned there as well. Happy reading!

it would be my guess that someone took a pair of cabinets and replaced the crossover/terminal plate and the tweeters. those are audax/polydax tweeters, a french company, and of decent quality.

Very nice! I had SC-E11's in their original box, they're die cast construction, very similar to minimus 7 in appearance, a bit better tonal balance and low end than the M7's. I regret parting with mine. I'll look thru my literature, but probably won't be able to add much to what you already know.

Screwdriver through the foam -no problem, just repair the hole if the foam's in good condition otherwise. Done that before, on a 12" woofer I had recently refoamed. Can't remember if I used any other materials than diluted latex caulk. You could you a piece of tissue paper or dryer sheet if nercessary to bridge the gap then seal it with caulk thinned with water. I tend to be pretty careful ...

The blue-lit McIntoshes are uber-cool though. I'm not so sure that the sound is for me (I think I'm into a slightly-earlier sound), but I sure do love the way they look. I want one of 'em just so I can sit and stare at the bright, blue light.

There are some calculations that are not explained in the Pi Speakers writeup, and needed some figuring out. Hopefully I did it right. Here is the compensating network I came up with to drop the gain of the HF by 10 Db and to provide high end boost as well. It does flatten out the upper octave somewhat, but a little more may be needed. The Xover schematic is given, and shows the ...

I don't know what they are. Nice looking though and I'd be curious too. I've seen similar tweeter arrangements, not always an indication of anything. I can't judge size from the pic are the 10" or 12" woofers?
