Pioneer SA-9100 Problems

Those big-uns are the output transistors we want to keep healthy, even though GOOD replacements are slightly less than 4 bucks each. The culprits are little silver top hat/can looking things with a c-shaped hunk of metal wrapped around them on the amplifier cards that are mounted to the heat sinks that have the output transistors on them. They are an assembly. Remind your pal to be very careful with the little fragile bias diodes also mounted...

EW advised me on the current limiters time is of the essence and a multi-turn can turn a simple adjustment to a PITA. In the case of the Spec 2 it gets blazing hot in just seconds, and you have no time to "multi-turn" On the Spec 4 do you hook up a 4 ohm, load while leaving the ohms switch at 8?

- Ive been referencing this thread as kind of a quality of parts spot: http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=269886 Cost isnt exactly an issue. I would like to replace anything with just about the best or good as exist now since its such a hassle finally getting in my receiver. We've already replaced the caps. I only have spare NPN, extras from the last replacement round. Either a mouser order or whatever I can pick up at RadioShack. I hooked up everything BUT D7 to see if it holds. SO...

I used a bunch of those Hitachi caps when he had them. They seemed a little light. I'd save the bad one and cut it open to see if it has something else inside. Normally I use the 22,000µf 100V United Chemi-Con caps from Newark, 36DA223F100CD2A, #95F4479. Reasonable price, and probably one of the best caps out there for a Spec 2.

I use the component tuner for tuning. The tube's tuner section is powered up as I still get a mono FM signal at mpx out. I dont use this. I connect the antenna to the component tuner. Does SW use the am antenna? If so, I don't have one connected. I didn't think there were any SW broadcasts anymore. I enjoy good FM and was looking for a way to get good stereo through the tube reciever. I have found the tuner in the SX-434 is...

Check for vibration sensitivity, by tapping gently around on the various boards and connections/connectors. Could have a fractured solder joint and it only manifests after warm up has caused a bit of thermal displacement.
Enjoy,

I replaced the 2sc1775E with KSC1845FBU and this might be the fix. On turn on the offset was 36mV and dropping to 0 in 5 minutes. It seems to slow down around +2mV and goes back and from +2mV to -1.9mV I don't have time to test it longer tonight but its a lot better than it was .

Nice looking unit. There's got to be a way to sand that top rail straight across to get those scratches out of it. Maybe starting with a heavy to medium abrasive & working down to fine.
Gives me incentive to get going on mine.
Good work !!!

Those lamps are powered by the 5.4v regulator, Q12 & Q13 in a darlington pair, although R18, 100 ohms 2 watts could interrupt the power first, and the base voltage of the pair (Q13) is dependent upon the 13.5v power being present.
SO, read the voltages on Q13:
Q13's collector should be 12v or greater, if not check R18
Q13's base should be about 6.6v, if not, and the tuner works, check ...

OK, not sure what i am looking at i guess. one spot says stabilizer board assembly, the other says power supply. anyhow, whichever this is, it has rather unique looking diodes on it which i fear are going to be hard to come by, and it looks like a D313, or according to the schematic a 2SD313P transistor might have fried. the transistor that actually exploded is right next to the 313....

From my experience the relay not working could be many things.
Could be before or after the relay.
First thing would be to check the voltages on the Power supply board outputs and should give some indication which direction to go.
That's a good SM and usually easy to follow.

Well, I have a Pioneer SA-400 int. amp.
Matched with a couple of CS-E700, the combo really sings.
I´m now looking for a SM-83 but as soon as I have decided I want one, there´s none on flea bay.

Congradulations,
Somehow, I only ever hear about these but never find them myself.
I always seem to be off by one.

Hi all,
I am about to start my recap project affecting my SA-7800, SA-8800 and SA-9800 amps.
To be honest I already recapped most of the PSU boards of my SA-7800 and SA-8800 with high quality replacements. The 4 power caps are still waiting.
I don't expect any big issues while recapping except that it needs a lot of patience and time, especially the SA-9800 which needs to be ...
