QUOTE (aliali @ Jan 1 2010, 07:01 AM) For me it was a nearby power pole strike, yet the surge came down the phone line fried my ISDN modem and all the USB ports on the PC. Also destroyed 3 ceramic fuses and an isolation switch on the fuse board in the dairy and blew an electric fencer off the wall. lol I like fireworks displays :P

QUOTE (Cybes @ Jan 3 2010, 02:50 PM) I have a Belkin 8-socket filtering power and phoneline for the desktop, plus a UPS bolstering the phenomenally crap power at our place. I realise that those aren't going to stop a lightning bolt (that's just crossed 10,000 feet of airgap FFS - like a powerboard is going to make a difference), but they will cope with the kind of surge, dip, spurgle, and noise that a strike a block...

QUOTE (Mac Dude @ Dec 30 2009, 02:10 PM) QUOTE (robzy @ Dec 30 2009, 02:06 PM) Because, I'd guess, HN offers much more support than Dell do. And probably without an accent ;) (hope I don't get done for the racist comment!) Nope, I rang up Dell earlier and was surprised that even their sales has been outsourced. (Or so I assume, given the three people I spoke to had thick accents that were at...

QUOTE (robzy @ Dec 30 2009, 06:25 PM) Thanks, I might raise this with my old man :P It does kinda suck that uploads are counted in the new plan, but given that you'd have to upload 18gb onpeak to equal the old 12/24 plan - it's pretty swanky. Rob. Yea I also felt the the uploads being counted (for me anyway) was not really an issue. :)

Thanks for advice about a situation you have absolutely no idea of the details of and obviously no actual understanding of. Only because it doesn't suit... Huh? Indeed... those microwave ovens chew a lot of power these days. 1kW of RF has to come from somewhere, and the magnatrons are significantly less than 100% efficient.

This is the Atomic forum, PC Authority have their own one. Both magazines are part of Haymarket Media though, so they don't really compete.

I'm trying to find a program which allows me to restrict access to the computer. I want it to allow certain programs to run at various times of the day, and allow a certain amount of use. So for example Ryan has a typing tutor and some educational software which he can be allowed to use between (for example) 4pm and 6pm. Then between 6pm and 8pm he can surf the web, play other games etc ...

So, any recommendations for surge protectors? Are we talking about something we can get from dicksmith or something that has to be industrial grade to do the job? I'm under the assumption that "good quality" to you means more like "uber quality" to me, the average joe. This is just incase I can't make it to the plug quick enough in the middle of the night or while I'm out, other rare ...
