QUOTE (hanbaobao @ Dec 26 2009, 08:12 PM) As you can see, integration is the norm in a modern world economy, which by the way just rendered your professor's drivel as pointless. No, it means he is right on point. Just because something is the "norm" doesn't mean it'll work to national benefit. And I'm not sure what you mean by "my" professor - I don't attend...

QUOTE (Red Fox Ace @ Dec 18 2009, 02:44 PM) I don't foresee Taiwan "defying" Beijing so much as Taiwan will simply not care for unification. Beijing can't tolerate status quo forever. But Taiwan has no desire whatsoever to shift from the status quo. If Taiwan simply ignores China's calls for unification, China will likely bring its weight to bear in negotiations. Like I said, a face-saving...

QUOTE (Red Fox Ace @ Dec 26 2009, 09:08 PM) Taiwan's impact on the international economy is more about what its absence would imply, than its presence. Imagine if a massive earthquake wiped out all of Taiwan's high-tech companies, for instance. The global economy would suffer severely as a result, at least in the short run. As you can see, integration is the norm in a modern world economy, which by the way just...

QUOTE (Red Fox Ace @ Dec 17 2009, 11:09 PM) Check out the 2000 Taiwanese presidential election. Chen Shui-Bian (DPP) was able to win the presidency with just 39% of the vote, because the other two nearest candidates each got only 37 and 23 percent, respectively. That's how democracy works. Did you know that CHina have grown the most since the reform period from 2000 to 2008? It completely transformed itself. quoting old...

QUOTE (TMM @ Dec 17 2009, 11:30 PM) Taiwanese are one of main contributers in Mainland's rising economic, aside from HK, they have invested more money than even the USA. Around 300k Taiwanese in Shanghai alone while next to it is Kunshan City which has been called "Little Tapei". When DPP was in Power, the world economy was healthy, when KMT is in power, the world is in recession. Try to place DPP in...

QUOTE (Red Fox Ace @ Dec 25 2009, 04:21 PM) There's the issue of Taiwanese investment in China sharpening the quality of Chinese products, to the detriment of Taiwanese products. you can't hold down china forever. and like i said, allow china tech company to invest in taiwan, doing R&D, and building infastructure.. this will created more jobs in the short term. in fact, lenovo (china top tech company) is...

QUOTE (BurdenOfAges @ Dec 18 2009, 02:39 PM) In the case that Taiwan does not declare independence, a face-saving situation in which the two countries agree to a "one country in name, two countries in reality" framework might work. The main issue is to avoid sending the signal that the CCP is a paper tiger, and won't do anything in the face of secession despite its own laws. Let's face it: if...

QUOTE (MiCC @ Dec 17 2009, 02:10 PM) oh you bet they will, they lost too much face to the western nations back then and they will not lose face again. Who cares if you lose face, a war in Taiwan will be bad for China, Taiwan and possibly the US and I think the Chinese government knows that

QUOTE (madeintaiwan @ Dec 18 2009, 12:42 AM) So, are Africans. There are 600,000 africans and 400,000 middle easterners in Guangzhou alone. What is your point? When DPP was in power, there was already a recession, Bush went to war in iraq, remember?!! kmt are being abused left and right, cuz they lied about being able to change the economy , but can't. That is why DPP will return to power, to set things...

Attacking Taiwan will result in opening a new universal realm of anti-china problems , I don't think they are that stupid. China is more focused on trying to prove itself as a international world leader right now , they won't risk that for measily "face". It is great to see Taiwan investing in other countries other than China. You certainly don't want to be so dependent on any one particular country. It is best to diversify.

QUOTE (hanbaobao @ Dec 23 2009, 08:24 PM) China's neighbours are all having closer cooperation with China and profitting from it massively. Taiwan, which share more than ecomomic ties with the mainland seems to be the exception. The difference is that there is no potential for Vietnam, Japan or South Korea to unify with the PRC.

In terms of cost effectiveness, Patriot is a very poor investment for Taiwan. It's better than nothing, though - and at least, it may double as a very effective anti-aircraft SAM system.

@ SinoWarrior: If East Germany had been 50 times larger than West Germany, or if North Korea were 50 times larger than South Korea, then your analogy would make more sense.
