I accept with information: There is no need to be able to see your pencil lines after the umber layer as the umber layer IS your lines. If you paint the umber layer carefully enough, your original pencil lines have served their purpose already and are subtituted by the new umber layer's tones.

what a nice and complicated composition. At least you do not have fruits or flowers or similar so that you can spend as long as you want on this lovely painting ) Your painting is very delicate, very good job, I will keep on watching you. Violetta

your painting is too good , you should get award for this , it is look like a snap which is captured by digital camera. i have a little image of map of the river.

According the Dutch methode... MDF panel ( 60 * 90 cm ) with grey (Titan White and Charcoal Black, the ready-to-go gray doesn't have enough light...) underpainting with Rembrandt Oil Burned Umber and Titan White. A little but more focus on glazing...

Gray scale can be obtained in photo stores too (not digital camera or computer store). Kodak makes one of the best GrayCards. I do not know what for you use it? To me the purpose of gray scale is to figura out is some tone belongs to light or dark side, and how deep it is from the limit.
